Both for adhd and autism. I got the adhd diagnosis (and meds) but the autism diagnosis was a disaster
First a multi hour appointment that resulted in “we’re not sure, let’s get another appointment with a different psychiatrist”
Second multi hour appointment, same result
Third appointment,
Q4: Did you seek/get official diagnosis after self-id? Why (not)? #AutChat

I missed #AutChat because I'm driving home from another state today, but it looks like it was all about self-diagnosing autism, which I wouldn't have had anything to talk about with anyway. I think it's fine, but I didn’t do it, so there's no drama to get into or story to tell.

A1: I have an autism diagnosis from a state-contracted neuropsychiatrist. I sought diagnosis as an adult, after hitting burnout, hoping there might be some help available. There was not, & most people, including mental health professionals, disbelieve my diagnosis anyway, bc stereotypes.

Q1: Do you have a formal diagnosis? If so, what led you to get one? (Or was it a surprise?)

If you don’t have a formal diagnosis, have you considered getting one? Why or why not? #AutChat

To be clear, I think self-diagnosis is perfectly valid, & often the best option. Just saying: The gatekeepers are lying about their standards. #AutChat

A2. It’s given me access to services through Regional Center, which has allowed me to live more independently than I was otherwise able to. #AutChat

A3. I have not had any negative consequences, unexpected or otherwise. However, with the current political climate in the US, I do worry about it. #AutChat

I don't know if this is a forma diagnosis thing, or if it is a "the world knows I"m autistic now" thing, but I feel like there's been a lot of prejudice because of it.

I've had to deal with teachers who don't want me in their classroom because I'm autistic.

Seems it's a similar story everywhere.

They wanna take away WFH which I got for autism mainly for me too. 🙃

#AutChat is a tag for autistic people & "autistic cousins" (people with similar experiences due to hydrocephalus, cerebral palsy, ADHD, etc).

We welcome autistic/similar people whether formally diagnosed, self-diagnosed, or questioning/wondering if they are autistic/similar.

I'm autistic, but I really don't care what anyone else (expert or not) thinks. I already read autistic voices and try autistic advice that seems right for me. I don't care whether I'm "actually" autistic or "just" have some autistic traits.

A1. Yes. My parents had known I was autistic since I was a toddler, but didn’t seek a diagnosis until a mental health crisis in my mid 20s led to searching for more services. At that point my mom suggested an evaluation, which I agreed to. #AutChat

When I'm on my meds, I feel a lot less impulsive, and I'm more likely to stay focused on one thing for longer periods of time.

But the initial process of starting a task is different, and so now I can't rely on impulsively wanting to do it.

It's like, I have to intentionally plan it.

A2: In undergrad I needed more support to understand the hidden curriculum and interpret academic policies. My literal thinking meant that when instructed to *call* the disability resource office, I didn’t think I could email or go in person to get what I needed. #AutChat

I'm bad at bullshitting though discussion posts, sometimes there's nothing valuable for me to say or everyone's response is similar (or clearly AI) and it's hard to force out a response
If I don't get along with a professor it's very hard for me to navigate the situation
October 26, 2025 at 8:46 PM
Did you also have trouble with those people not respecting your time by always being late to appointments with you?

I had a disability advisor of some sorts in community college who was sometimes a full hour late for our sessions.

So I stopped showing up.

They didn't help anyways.

I've had accommodations (both formal and informal) for a looooooong time.

Right now it's actually all informal but I'm reasonably confident in them in my current job lol

Support for going through fights like this. Like real support. Not "support" who has to be neutral between employers and employees and let one wait forever while time is ticking.
