DHS is shutting down because it refuses to obey the law. They are tear-gassing schools, killing American citizens, and disappearing legal immigrants. Democrats shouldn’t fund an out of control ICE.

DHS is shutting down. Why? Because Democrats took an oath of office to uphold the Constitution and ICE is lawless and out of control. We cannot fund an agency that is murdering our citizens, tear gassing school zones, and disappearing legal immigrants.

Appreciate the talk about banning ICE masks in shutdown negotiations.

But the non-negotiable should be congressional oversight of ICE detention facilities. Full access, no appointments, no permission slips.

No compromise.

We just entered the 3rd government shutdown of Trump‘s second term, which has only been a year.

BREAKING: DHS has run out of funding and is shut down.

GOP lawmakers refused to negotiate reforms to stop ICE from killing people in broad daylight, locking up kids, & making our communities less safe.

Lawmakers should not fund the agency until ICE is reined in.

DHS funding runs out today. That means we have real leverage in this fight since a funding bill can’t pass without Democratic votes. Call your Members of Congress and demand they reject any bill that doesn’t stop ICE and CBP terror.

The Department of Homeland Security—including ICE and CBP—ran out of regularly appropriated funding last night after President Trump and Republicans refused to agree to reforms Democrats proposed to curb ICE and CBP’s lawless conduct.

That’s been my message to Congress…
shutdowns aren't generally a negotiating strategy—people don't usually get more than they otherwise would have out of a shutdown.

but in this case I think Ds are hearing from the base that they'd rather the thing just be defunded.

so, mindful of @jonathanbernstein.bsky.social 's point that shutdowns only happen when somebody wants them, it seems pretty clear that in this case Democrats wanted to shut down DHS. they had the option for another 2 week extension and they turned it down. 1
