Rubio urges Europe to rearm

9m

At the Munich Security Conference, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio sought to reassure Europe with a conciliatory tone but insisted it adopt U.S. priorities and bolster its own defense.

Rubio just made a speech to the European defense community in Munich that did not mention Ukraine. Or democracy. Or US business deals with Russia. Or the administration's plans to support the European far right. But there were lots of nice words about our common civilization.

america still dominant.

everyone sees the cracks in the transatlantic alliance.

I just posted an essay on Marco Rubio’s speech this morning at the Munich Security Conference 2026. It is an extraordinary historical fabulation about Western civilization and needs to be dissected to get the full import of these Hegelian times. Read here: open.substack.com/pub/bernardh...

Rep. Jason Crow on Rubio's Munich speech: "Not only did he say things I found disturbing, what was also important was what he did not say. He never mentioned Russia once. He never mentioned China once. There was historically revisionism."

Strength isn’t isolation. It’s partnership. At the Munich Security Conference, I’m talking about why alliances make us stronger and safer. Join me at the MSC Bookstore (18:00–18:30) as I discuss these themes + more from my book Autocrats vs. Democrats: www.amazon.com/Autocrats-vs...

Rubio's speech at the Munich Security Conference shows how poor the US-Europe relationship is:
1. Rubio came rather than toxic Trump, Vance or Hegseth.
2. The headline was "US will not abandon transatlantic alliance.
3. He questioned European domestic policies.

No, Mr Rubio: your speech sounds deaf to European ears after a year of multi-pronged American threats and coercion.

No word on Ukraine, democracy, the Trump administration’s nor plans to support Europe’s far right.

I would describe the vibe in this overflow Munich Security Conference room listening to Marco Rubio as “skeptical.”

Rubio on Europe: "the alliance that we want is one that is not paralyzed into inaction by fear – fear of climate change, fear of war, fear of technology"

OK, but the Europeans want to take action on climate change, whereas the Trump administration is shifting the US to inaction.
