The eplusm scale is an interesting take on the old log-scale chestnut. It is logarithmic for the landmark steps (1, 10, 100), but linear in between. Crazy idea, but according to user studies, it seems to work pretty well in some settings! github.com/jdfekete/d3-...

this cartoon sums it up.
This next decade is about China's solar hockey stick of hope against the petrostates led by the US.
China's bet made Solar+batteries+EVs turn into business models of Coke cans-everywhere, cheap, accessible, satisfy the thirst for freedom.

Also watched Goodfellas. And I’m embarrassed to say I thought the:

“What do you do?”

“Construction”

Line originally came from Ashanti’s music video for Foolish

I watched the coda version of godfather 3 and ngl this seemed like an inappropriate way to end it

Watched the godfather films for the first time this week. They were pretty good. Does seem like a lot of logistics and stress to be a gangster though.

was curious to see what this looked like on a log plot alongside some benchmarks; TSLA market cap has been roughly tracking equilibrium NGDP growth in the 2020s; the low path is ~ typical stock market equilibrium growth or ~3x NGDP; the high path is ~20x NGDP

Bloc formation (the creation of “a US-led bloc that excludes China” which also entails a China-led bloc that excludes the US) is the most dangerous path forward for the whole world, threatening the potential of China's clean energy industries while greatly increasing the risk of global war

Current efforts towards bloc formation are uneven, inconsistent, and undermined by Trump's interest in cutting deals with Xi. But should the recently renewed US-China trade truce fall apart, a more coherent and consistent bloc formation strategy would likely emerge in the renewed escalatory spiral

I have a new article out about US-China bloc formation, climate change, and war
🚨 NEW: Read @tobitac.bsky.social “Cold War on a Warming World” for sharp analysis of China’s economic development, its clean energy dominance and why Washington’s foreign policy response is a threat to global decarbonisation.

English #etymology of the day: the word "mocha" (as in coffee) is ultimately from the name of the city of Mocha or المخا al-Mukhā in Yemen. A port city on the Red Sea, Mocha played an important role in the historic coffee trade. "Moka pot" also has the same etymology.
Reading about Rabbi Baruch ben Shumel. Born in Pinsk, immigrated to Safed (1819) and then travelled widely in the Arab world. Became the physician of the Imam of Sanaa, al-Imam al-Mahdi Abdallah, and then killed by him (after advising the Imam to refrain from sex, and asking to be governor of Mocha)
