“If you saw all this in any other country — soldiers sent to crush dissent, union leaders arrested, opposition politicians threatened — it would be clear that autocracy had arrived. The question, now, is whether Americans who hate tyranny can be roused to respond.”

The AG opinion on Hungary's anti-LGBT+ law is out: it proposes that the ECJ agrees with the Commission on *all counts.* This would be massive: Hungary would be in violation of not just separate rights but Art 2, the founding values of the EU curia.europa.eu/jcms/upload/...

How do you constitutionalize a culture war?

GÁBOR MÉSZÁROS argues that Hungary’s 15th Amendment increasingly turns its Fundamental Law into an exclusionary project, targeting minorities under the guise of protecting children.

Great explainer about the latest assault on the independent sector in hungary
This seems like an existential threat to Hungary's independent sector. Besides practically forbidding any criticism of Hungary's "democracy" if an organization or media outlet receives foreign funding (including EU money), it would make receiving domestic funding difficult as well.
@politico.eu: "The bill says threats to national sovereignty include influencing public opinion, promoting democratic debate, or challenging state-defined values like Christian culture and traditional family roles."

9. Most importantly, I hope that young WOMEN will not be studied as the aberration (or the norm), but as an EQUAL part of a complex and heterogeneo young generation, which is:

- more inclusive
- more divided
- different from previous generations
- more open to the far right

🇪🇺 Who decides on ousting a Member of the European Parliament?

🇭🇺 A new Hungarian law would allow national authorities to revoke the mandates of elected MEPs. With Beáta Bakó, we argue that an EU-level oversight is necessary.
Removal of Hungarian MEPs Threatens EU Democracy
A new proposal would let Hungary revoke MEPs’ mandates for false asset declarations. As the EP ensures the EU’s democratic legitimacy, its members’ removal should face EU oversight. The CJEU—not natio...

💥Hungary sliding further into authoritarianism: Viktor Orbán’s close ally, Speaker of the House László Kövér, banned the entire liberal Momentum party faction from parliament and fined them €175,000 for protesting Orbán's Pride crackdown—setting a precedent to ban other elected opposition MPs too.

❗️constitutions don't defend themselves, people do
one thing i keep thinking about is how there is simply no way to design a constitutional system that can resist authoritarian incursion if participants in that system do not actually care that much
