I'm sure there will be denials. However, the contractors have been arrested. Whether they will be convicted on harsher sentences than the political activists remains to be seen.
The Hong Kong fires is a political story, not a bamboo tragedy. It is about what happens when institutions are no longer accountable because of the erosion of the rule of law. When a government focuses on controlling the people, not serving them. When civil society is crushed.

David Lammy was right in 2020 when he called the jury system fundamental to our constitution.

Now the government wants to remove juries from all but the most serious cases. It is dangerous and wrong and the Prime Minister must reverse it.

Deep pockets funded by??? Yet the far right supporters/voters aren't addressing the elephant in the room?
Reform UK Party Ltd spent £700,000 on a 2-page spread — one page being just an image of Farage and the other a letter, meaning he spent £350,000 on pictures of himself.

The average UK house price is £272,000.

Also, the ‘full English’ is badly photoshopped on — it's tiny!

Many professionals earn more elsewhere. If UK tries to stop these people from staying to serve our communities, it will be the worst decision they can make to pander to the far right voters who are few.

Best understood, Labour's attack on juries, as a further lurch towards authoritarianism. Who, now, will stand in the way of a State that wants to imprison its opponents?

Was trying to work out in which way Shabana Mahmood, an otherwise pretty unremarkable politician, could possibly be described as a "luminous golden star" who "dazzles like a blue-white supernova" and then I realised, its simply a willingness to be a bit more cruel to immigrants

Hong Kong was fought for by the British government and through the hard work of many migrants to HK and their descendants. Hk became one of the fastest growing economy in the world.

Yes, life wasn't a bed or roses, it never is. But, it worked. HK consisted of many migrants, too.

He asked if I was teaching them how to play mahjong in English.

I struggled to find the right word in Cantonese to describe a rugby scrum. Brought a lot of laughter amongst my HK migrant students.

One joked how did I become a journalist with the lack of vocabulary. I quipped - that's why I was an English language journalist and not a Cantonese/Chinese one. 🤣🤣
