I really f**king love Hong Kong, and Funassyi!

Have decided to post daily re Hong Kong heroes & heroines. 1st up: Chow Hang-tung. Activist, barrister, former vice-chairman of the HK Alliance in Support of Patriotic Democratic Movements of China that organised Hong Kong's (once) annual June 4th candlelight vigils, and current political prisoner.

INGRAHAM: A Chinese diplomat said the prime minister of Japan should be beheaded. These are not our friends are they in China?

A reminder that in 2019, Apple removed an app that helped Hong Kong protestors track the police. And that many Hongkongers also actually used to avoid the police because they didn't want to deal with police harassment, police created "tear gas buffets", etc.

All stock weasel words that professors and editors have cautioned against using in my 25-plus years in journalism. Somehow, though, the activists carrying out the NYT's sacred mission of protecting the powerful missed that memo.

“New York Times conducts hostile interview with children’s education influencer questioning her recognition of comprehensively documented war crimes” is not a sentence I could have imagined a few years ago

The first film many Westerners saw Cheng Pei-pei in is probably "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" (2000). And few people knew what a legend she was. (Cheng passed away last year.) Thus, unlike when I viewed the film in Asia, audience members weren't gasping when they first saw her in it...

Until 2019, November 11th was Armistice Day for me. But now I remember it as the day that a cop shot a weaponless young protestor. It's a miracle the kid survived but tragic that he is now in prison -- arrested after he was shot, something witnessed by many Hongkongers as it was live-streamed.

"Universities are a vector for China’s Communist Party to control debate, reinforce its grip on power and build global influence. The party seeks to project China as modern + successful, and a responsible partner. Anything that draws attention to its more unsavory aspects undermines that narrative."
The lesson of China’s broadening interference in the education systems of democratic countries is that if we want academic freedom, we will have to pay for it.

There's also Akira Kurosawa's "Ran", which was the first Japanese film I ever saw. But I will forever associate him with "The Human Condition", an amazing -- and absolutely devastating -- trilogy of films that I viewed on a big screen 15 years ago.

Well this is not a nice start to my week. Someone reported to me that a kickstarter uses my pictures and it’s really sickening because they’re ALL mine with FREAKING AI bg. I already filed a copyright claim but it makes me sick.

Had my worst FF week ever thanks to my failing to predict that: - Sunderland would put 2 goals past Arsenal (I had Gabriel as my captain 😭)
- Aston Villa would smash Bournemouth 4-0 🤯
- Crystal Palace vs Bournemouth would be scoreless 😬
Also, didn't think Man City would beat Liverpool so easily!🙃

Went with friends to lunch at Thai Ki Lung (泰基隆) -- which, note, is scheduled to have its last day of operation this upcoming November 13th. After the boss recommended the Hainanese chicken rice, we all ended up ordering it. And yes, it was good. #YellowEconomicCircle

Okay, yes, I'm biased but I really do find Funassyi so much more fun to watch than pretty much any other mascot. (In this video, compare the Pear (Fairy)'s antics and the horse mascot next to it. Also... yes, it does like to shake its puriketsu (juicy butt), and its fans like seeing it doing it!😂)

Sunderland worked VERY hard to prevent Arsenal from playing their usual game... including "mov[ing] the advertising boards around the edge of the pitch closer in than usual, to limit the amount of space Arsenal players had when looking to launch the ball"! 🤯

That’s seven games in 22 days. 6 wins and one disappointing draw (that was nearly a win).
I don’t get the lack of fresh legs for the last 10 today but it’s inarguably a fantastic stretch and, with health from the guys who have been out, we will start the belly of the season with a killer squad.

Dammit. Wish Trossard's goal had been the winner. And it'd have been if Sunderland didn't get a goal from a free kick that shouldn't have been after Zubimendi was -- and Arsenal were -- wrongly penalised for a non-foul.
At least Arsenal didn't lose this game before the international break. 😬
