in case anyone'ss interested in an update on this as I've seen interactions on this old skeet lately:Five Below offered a $25 tablet last year, and it's horrible, but charming. Its only job atm is as a dedicated PDF reader for breadmaker recipes and running one game incompatible with 64 bit android
Morbid curiosity got the best of me and I bought the $25 Android tablet Five Below had for Black Friday. My favorite detail is you can see the exact outline of where the motherboard ends and they tapered in the shell to save 5¢ of plastic. It plays OSRS/Goat Simulator though so I'm happy with it.

My big project: The Death Generator.
It's a tool for making fake video game screenshots, just fill in new text and it'll give you a (generally) pixel-accurate image back, the correct fonts and everything.

It's great that the Discourse™ right now boils down to someone saying "it's wild that ice cream in moderation is relatively good for you as a snack, and even weirder how mad some people get when you mention it."

Followed by one guy getting unreasonably mad about it

yeah

I may be personally biased because I work in tech but a LOT of the individual engineers are fundamentally decent people who are also skeptical of how this stuff is being used

but they are not the decision makers, and the bosses have used the last couple years to aggressively limit their power
We should be specific when we say "tech", whether we mean the fascist overlords, or some kid who works at an Apple Store. The folks who organized unions at Amazon and Google are people, too, and are more _tech_ than any of the tycoons.
the only reason that tech was ever remotely left-coded was that in the early 2010s they consciously aligned themselves with what appeared to be the dominant political party. that meant large donations to Dems and nominal gestures toward diversity. as soon as the winds shifted they swung right.

This is probably too niche an opinion for most people to care about, but looking at SSDs made me realize we really need to come up with a max height standard for heatsinks on m.2 drives. Lookit this ridiculous thing, that's not fitting in half the spots they pot m.2 sockets these days.

I’m not quote posting Frum but the important thing to realize about everyone telling you that you have to seek out and engage with people you fundamentally disagree with is: no you don’t

that’s not your job, that’s not your responsibility as a human, you can just… not

Me, two years ago: ooh, a bug in my SSD's firmware causes it to go read-only prematurely unless I apply a patch? Well I've downloaded the fix now so I'll get around to it next time I reboot or whatever.

Narrator: He did not, in fact, get around to it.

Gonna be a fun weekend fixing this.

Ohhhhh my god u “warned everyone” that these terrible events would happen? Should we tell everyone? Should we throw a party? Should we invite Hannah Arendt?

May as well dive right in.

Did you know that dogs in ancient Mesopotamia also refused to drop the ball?

According to a Sumerian proverb, “The dog understands ‘Take it!’ It does not understand ‘Put it down!’”

Cis men truly need to understand the power of saying “that’s fucked up bro why would you say that” to another cis man
The responsibility for resisting and correcting this behavior shouldn’t fall solely on a specific gender. If you’re a man of conscience and you see another man mimicking Nick Fuentes, fuck him up on sight before the women even get a chance. I mean that.

Aight I'm just gonna say it: I'm tired of pretending Dave & Buster's isn't one of the best ways to blow an evening with some good friends. I don't know who convinced me it was "too dorky" to suggest as an activity, but that stops today.
