Story time! The star Betelgeuse gets its name from Arabic يد الجوزاء <Yad al-Jawzāʾ>: "Hand of Orion" (kind of, see below). In the 1200s this was misread as بد الجوزاء <Bad al-Jawzāʾ>, and was transliterated into Latin as "Bedalgeuze."

This is a really interesting article about a horrifying distortion of sign language happening in the UK, and which its creators are now trying to export to other countries and their sign languages

Learn actual sign languages from Deaf people, not from hearing people making their own weird versions!

I've been using HANLY lately and it’s honestly the best free app I’ve found for learning Chinese characters.

It breaks down each Hanzi into components, shows stroke order, evolution and super helpful mnemonics.

If you’re learning Chinese characters, this app is free and really good.

Ha, this Polish saying has already been assimilated into English enough to end up in Cambridge Dictionary, first English-language dictionary other than Wiktionary to include it.

It's become popular in English in the last few years, starting mostly with its use in Orange Is the New Black in 2017

Today marks 15 years since the release of Fallout: New Vegas.

Since 2010, players have explored the Mojave Wasteland where countless Couriers have walked the same road—each carving their own story. Thank you for keeping the spirit of the game alive all these years.

Now, in Montgomery County, Maryland, where the case originated, the results are in.

Only 43 families out of 160,000 students have exercised that new right.

Also worth noting that robins were called redbreast, not orangebreast, because they didn't have a word for that color until oranges reached england a century later
Actually my favorite bird etymology is that in 1400s England they gave human nicknames to birds (Jenny Wren, Tom Tit) but some of them stuck. Jack Daw became Jackdaw, Maggie Pie became Magpie. With Robin Redbreast they just dropped the original name of the bird entirely.
