The German word ‘Pferd’ and its Dutch cognate ‘paard’ are horses of mixed breed parentage.

Their common ancestor came from Latin ‘paraverēdus’ (substitute post-horse), a word composed of an Ancient Greek element and a Gaulish one.

Zoom in on my new infographic to learn everything about it:

People freak out when they see German like:
neunzehnhundertneunundneunzig 😱

But imagine English smashed together:
onethousandninehundredandninetynine

Or Spanish:
milnovecientosnoventaynueve

Any language looks confusing written like this.
German just looks scary at first, but it's not! 😉

It’s funny how some people hate the sound of the Spanish “Z” and “C” (before E or I)… but “think” or “thin” in English? No problem. 😏

In this restaurant in Les Angles (France), "La carte" became "El mapa" in Catalan.

I am pretty sure Google Translate was the chef here. Lunch just turned into a road trip. 😜

Language Preference Challenge!

Pick 1 from each pair:

1. Early-morning study or late-night study?
2. Perfect pronunciation or flawless grammar?
3. Focus on 1 language at a time or juggle 3 at once?
4. Study on a phone or on a laptop?
5. Speak from day one or wait until you're ready?

The Spanish word for 'film' is 'película'.

As different as they are, these words derive from the same Proto-Indo-European root.

They originally only meant "thin layer" but they came to denote film tapes as well when these were invented.

My new graphics shows more words belonging to this family:

It's curious how often this mistake appears in the media. 'Acta' is a feminine noun, so the correct form is 'la última acta', not 'el último acta'. Native fluency doesn’t always mean grammatical accuracy.

'Último' is an adjective and must match the noun’s gender which is feminine.
