Wishing things could only get better
This is probably very true.

But it also occurs to me that the same could well be said of the idealistic Left. It's easy to shadow-govern when there are no real world consequences to your policies.
Reform UK are learning the hard way that it's easy to shout insults at the players from the touchline. Far harder to get up on the pitch and play. They've been an absolute disaster wherever they are elected.

I simply do not fucking understand why the RW commentariat here mindlessly regurgitates Russian talking points.

It’s all so pathetic isn’t it

A new holiday tradition? A Santa, accompanied of course by his elves, robbed a major supermarket chain— and deposited $3,000-worth of food at the local food bank.

Now confirmed
EXCL: An agreement to rejoin Erasmus – the EU’s student exchange programme – set to be announced on Wednesday as part of UK government’s drive towards closer relations with Brussels.

Isn't this wonderful?
A mini-story to cheer you up this morning. The other day my teenage son returned to his locked bike to find the back wheel nicked. We went back yesterday to rescue it - and found this note taped to the frame. We have the wheel again. A very happy Xmas to Ollie and his note-writing other half.

I thought Liberati was a comedy piano player
And it looks to have been every bit as fatuous as you might expect. I especially liked the disdain for the concept of ethical sourcing. What would Jesus have said, eh? Bah, let's have child labourers make our myrrh? And the hopelessly convoluted idea that Jesus came "to be cancelled in our place".

Interesting point
At this point in time, AS LONG AS we also had a Brownite at the Treasury, it might be the best we could reasonably expect to have.
I never thought Id say this but on so many things I *wish* we had a Blairite govt

OT1H, yes hydration breaks are a good idea in hot weather.

OTOH, how handy for the advertisers
News: Every 2026 World Cup match will feature two "hydration breaks," no matter the weather.

Each half will pause for exactly three minutes midway through.

It's a player welfare measure. It also has sporting & commercial implications.

More @theathleticfc.bsky.social:
2026 World Cup to feature three-minute hydration breaks in every half throughout tournament
Every game will pause for three minutes in the middle of each half, which will essentially split the match into quarters.

Farage also wants an apology from the BBC "for all of your appalling output" or he won't speak to them again. He sounds very, very rattled.

Labour build alliances?
A left leaning party can't go a month without fracturing
“This strategy simply papers over cracks of a politics in which the Overton window moves steadily towards the hard right & likely big victory of the party that represents a full-fat rather than semi-skimmed version of national populism” - great from Neal Lawson on need for Labour to build alliances👏
Farage and the Tory right will unite because they want power. Will the left just stand by? | Neal Lawson
It’s time for a harsh reality check. A progressive bloc of parties refusing to see a common threat risks disaster, says Neal Lawson of Compass

Everyone I know out here in Southend around is utterly horrified. This is where Brexit and xenophobia have taken us
This should be the main story on all TV news programmes. The University of Essex is closing its Southend campus because of the fall in the number of foreign students and the loss of income they provided for the University. www.echo-news.co.uk/news/2566689...

So what happens when they (chortle) win a General Election? Do they time share #10?
This is a very Your Party thing to do. Instead of picking a leader they've gone down the collective party leadership role route.

That will just lead to a lot more internal jostling for power and in fighting while media won't know who to invite on to their programmes.

I think this idea has merit
Various policy initiatives, including tax incentives, have made a significant difference to alcohol and tobacco abuse.
Gambling is the next big, socially corrosive "sin" that needs to be tackled.
My carefully considered, nuanced and balanced policy view is that we should tax gambling profits, including sports betting, at like 98% and one executive's kidney per quarter.

I'm not sure having every UK mainstreet be three quarters Ladbrokes is good, actually.
