Here’s something that’s really important for everyone to understand.

If we design our cities just for cars, they fail everyone, including drivers.

If we design our cities with many great CHOICES in how to get around, they work better for everyone, including drivers.

Spread the word.

Me on a bike in a museum in the lovely town of Steyr, Upper Austria, just having finished pedalling enough to generate the energy needed to take this selfie. A fascinating reminder of how much power even simple digital actions require. 💦🚲⚡

Have you heard of “The Populist Playbook?”

A few years ago, I posted what I still consider one of my most important messages.

It was about “The Populist Playbook” that I’ve watched play out often over my 33+ years of city planning.

Since then, it’s only gotten worse.

Do the steps sound familiar?

Everyday life is full of small choices and opportunities to move more. Whenever possible I choose the stairs. It’s the healthier option and an easy way to add mini workouts into your daily routine. #GymOfLife

The City of Vienna provides mobile bicycle racks available for temporary rental at events. An efficient and well-organized service that supports sustainable mobility and encourages cycling-friendly event management. 👏

this intersection is problematic and has been reported on our map several times: www.radkummerkasten.at#marker-6530 please support it with a like or comment over there.
Also consider reporting it via Sag's Wien App or directly to the Mobilitätsagentur Wien. We would appreciate a better crossing!

Outstandingly dangerous intersection design: two right-turn lanes crossing both a zebra and a bike lane. Drivers block each other’s view and the view of cyclists and pedestrians making it a high-risk spot for everyone. That really needs to be fixed. @radlobby.at maps.app.goo.gl/qipzgYwkfVBJ...

While Bluesky may not have the user base of Twitter or FB (611M & 3.07B), it does have a healthy 38 million registered users.

Bluesky reaches people who tend to be kind, solutions-focused & future-oriented, compared to the big corporate social media channels.

I consider that a feature, not a bug.

Truth bomb 👇: Traffic lights exist for cars, not for people walking or cycling. Before cars, we didn’t need them. Only when intersections became controlled and no communication was necessary could high speeds exist without chaos. We traded human interaction for convenience for motorists and danger.

Another appreciation post for the bike + train combo! Wind and rain this morning, but I still wanted my ride. Threw on my rain gear, cycled to the nearest station, and skipped the longest (and wettest) part. Still got my exercise without arriving soaked!

I love research, especially in cycling infrastructure. But if a project in 2025 still asks whether paint alone makes roads safe for cyclists, amid cars going 100 km/h and trucks or buses 80 km/h, it’s a waste of time, money.
