I guess I should introduce myself: Salut! I'm Alanna, or Lansi. WHOA (lansi) cuz I can be a little intense; I'm not for everyone, & that's ok.

I'm an accidental urbanist - we traded our second vehicle for a cargo bike in October 2023. I now do all my running around #YYC by bike, & I love it.

I just called the premier’s office to express my opposition to Bill 9 and the use of the notwithstanding clause. Wait time was about 5 minutes.

PLEASE PLEASE consider calling with your feedback. All comments are being forwarded to the premier’s communications team.

Let’s fill up those documents!

The UCP, and their supporters, are claiming that S33 needed to be used to prevent sterilization of children. But no evidence is provided about the amount of surgery occurring below 18 (puberty blockers are not the same thing as surgery). Is it 0, 5, 50, 500, 5000?

Oof. Way too much talk about transgender rights & debating on issues that shouldn't ever have been given a platform over the last 12 hours. My heart is so heavy for all the trans kids who are going to suffer thanks to Bill 9. #abpoli

Two strong little girlies riding to school today. It was pretty icy on our route today, but they went slow & steady & made it there just fine. Proud of them! #bikebus #yycbike

Little bit wet on the ride home today. My hair is soaked & I regret not wearing my ski helmet & goggles. I think it's gonna be pretty icy tomorrow morning though! #yycbike

Three UAs at pickup last night. We made a few people smile (& comment about how it was sad that the season was coming to an end, which always makes me laugh. We ride year round!) #yycbike

We took family photos at one of our kid's favourite places: Balmoral Circus. It was a really fun way to document this stage of our lives & showcase one of our favourite ways to spend time together (on bikes!) #yycbike @calgary.ca

You guys realize that taxing people to pay for services isn't socialism, right? This is just how governments work.

🚦 Today is the Day of Remembrance for Victims of Traffic Incidents 🚦

In Canada ~160,000 people are injured + ~1,800 die in traffic incidents annually. With partners, we're working to make roads & communities safe, sustainable + more prosperous.

The AMA has done the math showing that the cost to operate an automobile can approach $10,000 PER YEAR!

For that kind of money you could buy a new Urban Arrow electric cargo bike, ride it for a year, toss it in a dumpster, buy another, and you'd till be ahead.

There is another way. #cargobikelife

Here’s something that’s really important for everyone to understand.

If we design our cities just for cars, they fail everyone, including drivers.

If we design our cities with many great CHOICES in how to get around, they work better for everyone, including drivers.

Spread the word.

Drivers: I know you think you’re doing cyclists a favour by stopping & waving us through an intersection while you’ve got right of way, but you really aren’t. You’re being unpredictable and screwing up the flow of traffic for everyone and just causing further delays for us to safely cross. Stop it.

Winter bike gear time is upon us. The snow isn't really sticking & the fleece was probably overkill, but I don't love getting pelted with wet snow when I'm riding. #yycbike

Love this thread about winter cycling & needing to design for it (& maintain those designs through that season). Ultimately, driving, walking, rolling, running, riding are all harder with snow, but we can manage it if we choose (& we do, for cars).
I dislike the framing of winter as an “excuse”, as if you can wish it away.

I see it as an additional *challenge* that is *surmountable*.

Winter cities need to (1) design bike infrastructure for snow, (2) care about plowing, and (3) learn how to do a good job of plowing/maintaining the bike lanes.

Driving is harder with snow, but we manage. Walking is harder with snow, but we manage. Both requires special equipments and infrastructure to function during winter season (winter tires, winter boots, snowplowers). I don’t see why biking should be an exception.

WInter is tough for everyone. Trip times regularly double for drivers after a snowfall, and for short trips, you're gonna be cold biking or driving.

WInter is just a reality in a winter city, and there are challenges for all modes. At least you get to be on a bike, which makes every trip better.

This week I wrote about the rise of the e-bike dad - this piece was originally going to run alongside the story I did in September about the bike boom in general, and we didn't have space in print, but here it is:

Thankfully noticed that the car wasn't going to yield as it was supposed to and avoided being hit while leaving the cancer hospital.
As much as I think about how ironic it would be to be hit by a car going to/from cancer treatment I'm just not that committed to the bit.
