This is one of the most profound essays I’ve read in years. You don’t need me to tell you that Hanif Abdurraqib is one of the finest writers of our time, but this essay in particular is a hard-won offering. Please read it and share with people you love.
In Defense of Despair
The feeling is most commonly framed as an end point, a level of despondency that cannot be overcome. But it doesn’t have to be so.

days like today I think I’d really appreciate a news app with push notifications that respect my time and attention bandwidth. Ie “we know a ton of stuff will happen today so we will are only going to send you an alert if you *actually* need to stop what you’re doing and pay attention.”

This is almost such an obvious point, it feels slightly crazy to point it out, but a politician winning a national election does not mean that the criticisms of that politician were wrong. Nixon and Bush both go reelected and everything their most unsparing critics said about them was right.

Ashley’s right, and there are too many people in this country who just don’t think children are people, with rights and feelings and dignity and full inner lives!
We have to stop thinking that what affects children won’t affect us. It always has and it always will. We could change the whole world—no hyperbole—by truly putting the welfare of children first, with all the considerations of their full human rights.

They are committed to the destruction of trans lives and trans existence. They will not win that fight, but understand, this is everyone's fight, and it won't be settled in the courts. These eliminationist politics will have to be fought at every level.
Matt Walsh outside the Supreme Court: "This case is just the beginning of the fight. It is not the end. We are not gonna rest ... until trans ideology is entirely erased from the earth. That's what we're fighting for, and we will not stop until we achieve it."

You pretty quickly learn that the rule is that any space or movement that is broadly right wing is authentic, virtuous, and can claim the mantle of being American, and that any space or movement that is broadly left wing is effete, out of touch, and cannot represent a viable version of America.
these people really seem to believe that twitter/x represents the broad public in some way
