In all the endless discussions of LLMs, there’s a point that is, on one level, obvious, but that I feel does not get sufficiently foregrounded: LLMs are transforming material that people have put up on the internet.

A completely serious question.

When people, and businesses, and institutions with the resources and reputation to stand firm…don’t, where does that leave this country.

This is horrible to post, but I may as well post it. We are essentially shutting down research operations in my group, which is focused on treatments for pediatric brain cancer. I’m a well funded investigator, and there’s no choice. Science can’t function without the stability of NIH

Microsoft's own research confirms something that was already pretty obvious: relying on a text generating machine to come up with answers erodes critical thinking, and is a method favoured by those who never liked doing critical thinking in the first place

🧵I think we need to talk about *waves hands wildly in all directions* differently.

I see 3 goals:
-Dismantling democracy+systems of accountability
-Advancing white supremacist policies here+abroad
-Immiserating non-billionaires for financial gain

Each action is toward those one/all of those goals.
So if I'm getting the chronology right, Trump/Musk & minions gutted the FBI in time for a Friday night news dump, hours ahead of launching their long-promised trade war. I hate to ascribe to them anything like careful thought but *wink* "they won't be talking about the FBI on Monday!" comes to mind.

In a functioning democracy, a President who pardoned a mob that assaulted the Capitol while trying to overturn the election, and who then fired the prosecutors who put them behind bars, would be removed from power.

Let's be really clear about how that happened:

MAGA Justices on the Supreme Court intervened twice to help Trump reclaim power. First, by disabling the 14th Amendment, which would have barred him from holding office. Then, by inventing immunity to keep him out of prison.

What will they do next?
There's a reason democracies don't let people who tried coups back into power.
