Russia is losing billions of dollars each month because of oil sanctions... Discounts on Russian oil have risen to 30% and in some cases over 50% (!) relative to Brent.

But this report may understate inflation a bit.

Here's why: Usually the BLS collects prices all through November. But the shutdown kept it closed for the first half of November.

So more prices than usual were collected in the middle of "Black Friday" sales.

The Fed just cut rates by a quarter of a percentage point.

The revised statement is remarkably buttoned down, probably due to the shutdown-inflicted data blackout.

And we are now up to three dissents - one for lower rates, and two for no change. But the committee is more deeply divided than that.

A relief, and good news: September's jobs report was (finally!) released, and it shows a relatively healthy labor market.

Payrolls +119k, a bit stronger than expected, and definitely well above recession territory.

The unemployment rate rose a tick to 4.4%, continuing a slow but worrying trend.

‘AI is going everywhere, doing everything:’ Nvidia beats Wall Street estimates amid market selloff and AI bubble fears
The $5tn firm handily beat expectations, but analysts are awaiting projections for future demand for firm’s AI chips Nvidia shares are rising in after-market trading after the company posted third quarter earnings that beat Wall Street estimates. All eyes were on Nvidia, the bellwether for the AI industry and the most valuable publicly traded company in the world, as analysts and investors hoped the chipmaker’s third-quarter earnings would assuage concerns about whether the high-flying valuations of AI firms have peaked. “Blackwell sales are off the charts, and cloud GPUs are sold out,” said Jensen Huang, founder and CEO of Nvidia in a press release. “Compute demand keeps accelerating and compounding across training and inference – each growing exponentially. We’ve entered the virtuous cycle of AI. The AI ecosystem is scaling fast – with more new foundation model makers, more AI startups, across more industries, and in more countries. AI is going everywhere, doing everything, all at once.” Continue reading...

We did this because inflation is settling around our 2% target.

Lemme spell it out. Trump's only leverage over Jimmy Kimmel and ABC came from FCC regulation. His direct power over H1-B visas gives him similar leverage over tech, higher ed, and others.
Critical part of the President's new $100,000 charge for H1-B visas: The Administration can also offer a $100,000 discount to any person, company, or industry that it wants. Replacing rules with arbitrary discretion.

Want visas? You know who to call and who to flatter.
