New conspiracy theory just dropped:

What if peer review, committee meetings, strategic plans, promotion & tenure processes, and letter-writing requests are all part of a secret plot to keep smart, creative, active minds from thinking and writing the big ideas that would *really* change the world?

My hot take is that all conference type events should be minimally hybrid events. There are ways to make it more secure and there’s ways to be intentional about who gets invited, but I don’t think that should hinge on whether someone can be there in person, given COVID and general accessibility. 🤷🏽‍♀️

I was going to be excited no matter which poem won the Hugo, because I was and am excited about there *being* a poetry Hugo.

But I'm extra excited because I have loved the poem since before it was published. Officially best. Hats off, @swantower.bsky.social

Academia has a lot of problems, and the cost of accessing research is certainly one of them.

I also think @thetransfemininereview.com is doing important and lovely work.

However, a lot of the arguments in this thread are not fair to people laboring within the academy & I want to talk about why. 🧵
There's been interesting conversation about my earlier posts on the economics of academic publishing.

Here's why I'm not fully sold on arguments that academic texts "need" to cost minimum $30-$40 dollars to break even 🧵

Superman and Fantastic Four both seem to be asking the same question: "Can you make a sincere, heartfelt superhero film in 2025?"

I'd submit that the answer is "no" and that this is because the genre relies on America having a positive global reputation.
