Well, the settlement money has been announced. Each WORK that got thefted will be compensated $3k (split 50/50 bw publisher + author). So authors will be compensated $1500 per WORK stolen.

Friends who teach courses on Cleopatra: is anyone willing to share a syllabus? I’ve been collecting assignment ideas and reception ideas for a few years now and am finally in the position of getting to launch the class. I’d love to see the macro structures others are using!

This makes sense in a sad way because
(1) the chaotic, shambolic nature of the attack makes long-term planning difficult and Ph.D. admissions (and faculty hiring) = long-term planning.
Adjuncts on contract require less long-term planning; expect a further shift toward that model.

There are basically only two positions in the debate about AI.
1. I’ve barely invested any time in learning how to use it effectively. AI sucks.
2. I’ve invested in learning how to use this tool. Holy cow, it’s transformational.

Arch of Titus also celebrated a victory over insurrectionists within Roman imperial territory who were framed as foreigners for triumphalist state propaganda, it’s worth noting.
The Arch of Constantine is one of the clearest state sponsored images of civil war and Romans killing other Romans in the name of seeing them as ‘enemies within’ that survives from antiquity. But sure yeah let’s build one of those in DC right now. Sure is timely.
People think there are no Roman history emergencies, right up to the day a sitting president proposes a triumphal arch. Now suddenly everyone needs a good handle on Titus and Constantine.

The Democrats aren’t being clear enough about this but we can be: this shutdown is about saving lives.
If we don’t reverse the Medicaid cuts (and the ACA subsidies on insurance bought through the exchanges) that Republicans made this year, people will die.

It would represent Trump’s most audacious effort to remake the landscape of D.C.

Trump eyes a triumphal arch to mark America’s 250th anniversary
The arch would be constructed across from the Lincoln Memorial, on a small patch of federal land currently occupied by a traffic circle.

Exactly this. People act like it’s entirely Higher Ed’s fault for losing public trust. And overlook how persistent and coordinated the PR campaign against higher ed has been for decades.
