When discussing reforms like multiplex zoning, demand estimates rarely enter the discussion (except as a force to be countered).
@lausterna.bsky.social and I think that’s unfortunate and we run some simple estimates what it would look like to zone for the demand to live in an area.

The Tyee should ask some mainstream economists what they think of Patrick Condon's Bizarro World real estate economics that they have consistently platformed & promoted.
I took a look at some of the YouTube interviews Vancouver’s mayor has been doing on Bitcoin, and what he says is pretty wild.

When I asked an economist about these theories he said, “This is not economics, this is — I don’t know what to call it.”

Housing is good, actually. Doubly so if it can increase our merge stock of non-market housing.
If you prioritize your aesthetic preferences over others having housing, or don’t want people of diverse incomes living near you, or have difficulty handling change, then city living might not be for you.

For my child and yours, I proudly support this transformative housing project: 1000+ purpose-built rental homes next to SkyTrain, turning a parking lot into homes for working people. It’s a perfect place to add density for our city!

The results show who is taking the housing crisis seriously!

Ok now up for Sean Orr: a tough one for me. Number of opposed speakers outnumbered supporters, so one vote should reflect them (WHAT. WHAT. THAT IS RIDICULOUS. WTF)

omg Sean Orr is going to vote against 1000+, zero displacement rental homes.

This, too, is disqualifying.

“Trickle-down housing” is the stupidest concept ever.

The straightforward idea that building new housing takes pressure off old housing gets equated with Reaganite tax cuts for rich people.
trickle down housing isn't a real policy- it's a theory used to justify inaction on building for those with the greatest need

The big problem with most of the financialization and commodification of housing arguments is the lack of foundation in data and real world processes. It’s 90% ideology and 10% cherry-picked examples.

The planners who implemented and defended the policies that led to this disaster?

We should never, ever listen to them again.

I am 100% serious. All of those 1970-1990s era planners, architects, landscape architects, and their ilk? They bear much of the responsibility for the housing crisis.

Housing production plummeted after TEAM was elected (they took power in early 1973). Under TEAM, single-family home neighbourhoods were frozen in amber and most growth was pushed to the suburbs.

TEAM, more than anyone, are responsible for today's housing crisis.
