NEW on @indicator.media: A first *full-scale* comparison of Grokipedia v Wikipedia.

Last week the awesome @harold.bsky.social rocked up to my desk bearing gifts.

Hal had collected almost all 900K Grokipedia entries and compared them to their Wikipedia equivalents for text and citation similarity.
Grokipedia cites a Nazi forum and fringe conspiracy websites
A site-wide comparison with Wikipedia sheds light on what Elon Musk is trying to do

This is information warfare. Using the most famous neo-nazi website and the most famous conspiracy theory grifter as primary sources while directly ripping off Wikipedia when convenient. This is the project of a deeply hateful, deranged, and dangerous mind.
The pilfering, however, is selective. On articles in Wikipedia's "controversial topics" bucket, the differences are far greater.

And that's where Grokipedia disproportionately adds low-quality sources, including Stormfront and InfoWars.

I once rode in the back of a taxi with @catherinebracy.com on the way from Github's HQ (the old oval office one) to a Code for America Summit way back when I was a brigade captain in Portland. I was already awestruck by her then, great to see her continuing to do good impactful work. Read her book!
So cool to see @catherinebracy.com on @thedailyshow.com. Very much enjoying her book “World Eaters” discussing how current state of venture capital shapes entrepreneurship / incentives very specific outcomes in society. Hard hitting, but nuanced takes.

For obvious reasons, this is a TERRIBLE idea. Facial recognition has high false positive rates for immigrants in particular!
New incredible detail here: ICE says a match in its facial recognition app Mobile Fortify is a "definitive" determination of a person's status, and that this overrides birth certificates. This is an app ICE is using in the field to scan people
