Farmer, UW-Madison Extension Educator, Baha'i. Views my own.
Grieving for the senselessness and hurt in the world tonight. The Baha'i Faith originated in Iran and its leaders were persecuted and exiled West until they ended up under house arrest in Palestine (now Israel), setting up our World Center in Haifa. May we work steadily toward peace. God is Glorious

Understanding this is so core to who I am. People think I'm crazy or lack empathy when I describe the way I have been treated by Xtians of most stripes. And because I'm a white farm woman in a rural red area who doesn't "look different," I've heard the things they say when they think they're alone.
I have a friend who is an exvangelical and she put it very succinctly: “We don’t believe anyone else is human. You are not people to us.”

Once you understand this CORE BELIEF and put it into context with the fact that these folks are running our country you can understand clearly their motivations.
This is expected from apocalypse cult Christians. Non-evangelicals are non-human and they exist only to die. Everyone “perishing from the earth” is the goal! “People are gonna die” is a success for them!

“I thought people understood” is the big giveaway. “You didn’t know your death is the plan??”

It's classist and ableist. There are multiple digestive disorders that essentially require eating processed food. Unprocessed food is literally harmful to people like me with gastroparesis.
The ‘ultra-processed food’ panic is pretty clearly just a mix of wishful thinking and classism

With the USDA agencies in shambles, cancelling contracts left and right, firing staff, and letting down farmers, why haven't they also forgotten about my FSA loan payment?

Today is the first day of the Baha'i Fast, which always takes place in March. It prepares us for Naw-Ruz, our New Year, on the equinox. This year it feels especially powerful that the solar and lunar calendars aligned so Muslims and Baha'is are fasting together. God is Most Glorious, Allah-u-Abha!

@leahlitman.bsky.social and @profmmurray.bsky.social can we please break down the fashion and Justice Thomas worship here and their implications for USDA?!

I’m in Japan right now so I’m obliged to remind the world — we don’t want AI. We want a robust rail system. We want trains. Metros. High speed. Locals. Cute trains. Efficient trains. Trains.

One of my coldest higher ed takes is that, given sufficient time, business schools will end up reinventing the humanities without realizing it
I’ve now had 3-4 exchanges with business profs who seem baffled that humanities profs are resisting their assertions that AI can teach our courses and AI can replicate our work.

They all seemed quite shocked that “you don’t matter and this machine will replace you” isn’t a winning sales pitch.

Had a pleasant surprise today when the family went out of their way to celebrate my birthday, which is tomorrow. They hadn't done that in a long time and it felt nice to be seen.

My husband is pro-spider, so I begrudgingly leave the cobwebs up in the bathroom. But this week I heard a buzzing and looked over to see one of the stupid cluster flies that have been plaguing us being wrapped up by a daddy long legs and I thought, "you get 'em, thank you for your service."

Over the past 20 years, broken gov't tax and economic policies elevated the Uihleins from super rich to unfathomably wealthy, and what they've done with that money is undermine democracy itself while evading minimum wage by using undocumented workers.

It's not easy to assess numbers like this divorced from context, but it's fairly astonishing that of the $51 million figure cited here, $47 million is for the system-wide transition to Workday

Meanwhile $1 million here or there would be transformative for many struggling units across the system
UW System spends millions on consultants - WORT-FM 89.9
The UW System paid Chicago-based Huron Consulting Group $51 million between 2019 and 2023, WORT found through an open records request.

I wish everyone who cares about food would spend just one hour interrogating and genuinely challenging the default belief that small farms are the future of sustainable agriculture.

I’ll say it if no one else wants to: small farms are a complete nightmare punctuated by brief flashes of euphoria.
