Star Trek: Starfleet Academy is turning into the exact type of Star Trek that I was craving. The first 2 episodes established the world, the Big Bad, and basic structures. But episode 3 was chef's kiss. Certainly high stakes for the cadets, but a low stakes and joyful romp for those of us watching.

This take collapses because it misunderstands agency, intent, and responsibility in Star Trek: Deep Space Nine’s in the Pale Moonlight.
Sisko was not manipulated into moral compromise. He chose it. Repeatedly. Knowingly--
Wait a minute— I thought we all agreed that Garak saved the Alpha Quadrant? I never questioned that, myself. Am I in the minority here? 🤔

i have written this a few times now but the reason JD Vance spends all day posting is that they barely tolerate his presence in the white house and have locked him out of every decision of consequence. he is basically unemployed
Shouldn't you be doing government shit?

My bestie and I are 2 sides of the same coin. My mum is a hoarder, her's is an OCD person with minimalistic tendencies. Both of us are extra stressed right now.

I have fallen off this map more times than I can count. And I still loved it.
Quake III Arena (1999). Unpopular opinion: I like Q3A more than Unreal Tournament 99, probably for the only reason that I played Q3A first.

I was not expecting these feels this early in the morning. I blame & thank @kithrup.bsky.social for sharing this lovely retelling that hits especially hard in our current timeline.
Ten years ago on December 14th I posted "Dolph," after a conversation among some queer friends and fellow authors about "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer," and it started a tradition of re-telling holiday stories through a queer lens that’s been going for a decade now.
Dolph
He was named Rudolph when he was born, but like so many born different, he eventually shed the one he was given. And if it hadn’t been for a foggy night and a hard decision, the rest of us fr…

Me: I'm going to take a break from doomscrolling to grab a real dinner and maybe have a few drinks and chat with internet friends.

Also me: The pope threw a rave and MTG is resigning before some crazy run? Trump is all about Mamdani? THIS IS WHAT I COME BACK TO?!

Leverage S05, E05 holds a place in my heart. I was a varsity cheerleader in highschool & even though my squad didn't do those insane competitions, it was still dangerous and I credit my coach with keeping us safe. It is unacceptable that cheerleading is not considered an actual sport.

Who has two thumbs and is being laid off from Amazon? Me! And 3 others on my 30 person team. I'm told that there will be 2 more days of layoffs this week and then another round in January.

One of the great joys in my life is making up stupid little songs and poems about Jack and then bothering him with singing or reciting them at him.
Ew ew ew just for an ad for one of those AI assistants in which a woman asks it to write a haiku about her cat.

You can’t write a 3 line, 17 syllable poem about your cat?????

What is being alive for if not writing tiny little poems about your cat??!!

Add this to my joker file. Good lord.

I do joke that I say thank you to my smart home devices because of the "AI Apocolypse" but really, it's just my default for polite neutral, which is how I treat any stranger I would encounter out in public. I also FPS games like Halo. Murder the aliens? Excellent. COD, murder people? No thanks.
I suspect a number of the “you shouldn’t be mean to LLMs because they may be in some way sentient” people are also “there is NO connection between playing violent video games and doing violent acts” people and uh, they’re gonna have to figure out how to reconcile those two concepts eventually

Had something similar happen in Mexico last year. Mum & I were at a crowded market & someone was setting off fireworks/noisemakers. I kept flinching & had my head on a swivel. An elderly man smiled & said "Calmete, calmete." My Spanish isn't good enough to explain why it stressed me out so much.
A motorcycle backfired or choked or whatever it does, bang-bang-bang, loud and fast near me, and the only thought I had was “Guess it’s my turn now.”

What are we doing to ourselves?!!!

This is all true.
the dailup sound was a protection spell the computer said for us every time we went online but we thought we were too good for it. we wanted to be on the phone and the computer at the same time. we wanted to be on the phone and the computer at the same time and now we’re fucked

I thought I had friends coming to visit on Friday and that I was going to have all day tomorrow to leisurely clean. HA! No, they're coming tomorrow. At 9 am. I have just done a panicked clean and all that's left to do in the morning is shower and sweep the kitchen.

Those of us who have worked, bare minimum, in the tech support space, know that users Re.morons. We love them, but they're stupid. We exist as guides, to keep them from cutting off their noses to spite their faces.
People are replying to this with “this is more an idiot problem than a tech problem.”

Counterpoint: technologists KNOW that many humans are idiots, and are thus *morally obligated* to design technological systems in ways that attempt to mitigate this universal problem.
AI does appear to be rapidly accelerating human selection of the fittest….

except it’s doing it by straight-up killing people who rely on ChatGPT to plan dangerous trips, not by improving human cognition like the techbros want us to believe:

There's a reason all of my bags are cross body or backpacks. Hand held purses are out of hand, out of mind.
the reason I use backpacks is because I also only have the demo version of Using Hands and — unless it has my complete focus — will unceremoniously drop what I’m holding and not even notice unless I end up kicking/stepping on it 🙃
I also don’t really understand how to use my hands for holding things? Like my brain only has the demo version of that software and sometimes I hit the time-limit of the free edition and I just spontaneously drop things

It’s great, never let me hold a fragile object or a small animal

Watching season 3 of Reacher, which is all @kithrup.bsky.social's fault. I would say that Reacher is 5-10% attractive due to physicality. The rest of the attractiveness is due to Reacher's loyality, his intelligence, and his cleverness.

Just found the Chekhov's gun in Reacher season 3. Can't wait to see how this plays out.

Well, as a cis woman of a Certain Age, I got my first mammogram. Lots of squashing & uncomfortable positions. But I was in & out in 12 minutes, so not too bad. I did ask the tech if the images would be available for me to view in MyChart & she looked at me like I was crazy. I want to see my insides!
