I see the end of opposing fossil fuels and the start of flat-out ignoring greenhouse gas emissions as a catastrophic ideological position and I want to ensure that the climate movement doesn't fall into that trap any deeper than parts of it already have.

Australians are abandoning travel to the US, and boycotting World Cup matches there next year, as the Trump administration flags new rules that will soon require visitors to hand over their social media history when applying to enter the country.
In a notice published on Tuesday, the US Customs and Border Protection agency (CBP) said tourists to the US from 42 countries including Australia would have to reveal all of their social media activity over the past five years under the new rules, which are up for a 60-day review before coming into effect. One interview featured a teen who said the ban won't work as they would just find an alternative platform. The PM menacingly said something like "and we'll find you there as well". What a total creep, but also 100% on brand for a political party that wants to lock up kids as young as 10.

Like these problems have been around for a while, but ChatGPT presents a unique temptation for students. I think if it existed 50 years ago we’d see a lot of the same issues. Or in other words, I think ChatGPT is a problem in and of itself, alongside larger structural/institutional issues.

And so the cycle continues: Trump wrecks the market with his own policies, then uses taxpayer money to bail out the damage, and somehow sells it back to voters as a win. Truly exhausting.
Trump is giving another $12 billion of taxpayer money to bail out farmers again from his disastrous policies. Just like he had to bail them out in his first term from his disastrous policies. But they will continue to vote Republican, as long as they keep getting their welfare checks.

So many teenagers learn about the big stories through TikTok and Instagram. They won’t suddenly turn to newspapers and TV bulletins
The social media ban for under-16s is going to stop teenagers from watching a lot of things: clips from their favourite shows, sports highlights, gaming reviews and just about anything else you can imagine.
What hasn’t been discussed much is the impact it will have on young people’s ability to access news and information. Continue reading...

The real question is not "Why is Bluesky so left-coded," the real question is "Why can't the right exist in a social media environment without algorithmic assistance, where people can ignore them"
