The next general election being a year away doesn't make the impact of the cuts any less terrible. That part remains the same. The difference is in the opportunity of the public to make something happen as a result. It's simply not as powerful to say that Republicans are polling poorly as a result.

The flip side of pointing to the election results as evidence of Dem leverage is that there are basically no more elections for another full year. Looming premium hikes and SNAP cutoffs are always terrible, but their power as leverage is magnified by looming elections. That’s gone for now.

I have to think this Trump/ESPN thing is an attempt to raise his favorability with "normal" people. It's backfiring horribly. I guess I can't really blame ESPN/Disney. When POTUS calls and says put me on the air, you do. Imagine the shitshow if they didn't. Fucked either way.

You have to understand what pieces like this from the NYT are and are not.
They are not an honest assessment of the state of politics today.
They are a negotiation tactic—an effort by a calcified, right-leaning legacy institution to steer the discourse in a direction more palatable to elites.

We can only hope they'll learn something.
Senate Dems are out here posting noise like "omg the Senate GOP just voted against healthcare subsidies and are trying to sneak a bunch of terrible shit into the funding bill" — and people are flooding their mentions with "bitch, please, GTFOH"

Groceries are cheaper if you do it the right way. First go to the oval office and give the president a fake award and tell him he's very strong and handsome. He will then call the grocery store and threaten them until they give you a discount. It's called the free market

Won’t somebody please think of the hurt feelings of the armed agents of state violence preying on vulnerable members of our communities and all others who don’t want to live in an authoritarian hellscape? They also have feelings, and those feelings must be honored.
From the outside it might look like ICE officers wear masks to avoid accountability, but in reality they are a way to avoid accountability.

This is an important point. But the issue is it came from the top. From leadership. And leadership is harder to purge.
The Democrats have 47 seats in the Senate.
Eight Democrats caved to the Republican offer.
One Very Important Democrat was arguably complicit.
That’s still just 9 out of 47.
Which is why the lede “THE DEMOCRATS CAVED” kind of bothers me.

It's all the lead they ingested.
Boomers as a generation have to die off before this country could even dream of becoming anywhere worth living again. I cannot BELIEVE how bad we have allowed this psychopathic septuagenerian government to steer this country

The premise here is that we need to unite and fight against Trump and the Republicans by the whole point is we ARE and your colleagues put up the white flag in this instance. So we can't "unite" with those who won't fight.
Many feel betrayal and frustration, and the feelings are hot right now.
I get it. I have my own feelings.

We are literally mad about your failure to fight the real dangers.
But there are real dangers out there that must be fought; and energy spent fighting each other is energy lost to that bigger fight.

Only Donald Trump could assert, in all seriousness, that the most important factor in a superpower's military might is ... branding.
Trump: "We have officially renamed the Dept of Defense back to the original name, Dept of War. And remember we won World War 1, we won World War 2, we won everything in between. We won everything that came before. And then we brilliantly decided to change the name. We became politically correct"
