This is such an obvious bill to pass that it's supported by Jim Jordan, @wyden.senate.gov, and everyone in between. It's absolutely bonkers that Schumer won't let it come to a vote, and every single person in NY who works as a journalist or with journalists should be lighting up his switchboard.

NEW: Legislation that would bar the United States government from spying on journalists—except under rare, specific circumstances—is currently stalled in Congress.

Now, with only weeks left to legislate, press advocates are urging Senate Democrats to pass the bill, known as the PRESS Act.
Senate Democrats Are Running Out of Time to Pass a Shield Law to Protect Journalism
The PRESS Act, which would protect journalists from government spying, enjoys broad bipartisan support and has passed the House—but it’s unclear whether the Senate will take it up.

the entire subject of raw milk makes me violently angry. like hulk out levels. there used to be a whole diagnosis called "cholera infantum" because thousands of babies shat themselves to death from raw industrial-dairy milk why would you want to bring that back!!!!
Oster writes that “With more information, we provide room for people to drink raw milk but also vaccinate their kids. Which is, basically, a reasonable choice.” Oster claims she is being far more nuanced, but I don’t think there’s enough nuance here. Raw milk is not “reasonable” for many people.

Hello, #Bluesky!

Wax Vanitas (c.1700) - intended to remind us of the certainty of death. One side features a skull with insects feasting on decaying flesh. The other side resembles Queen Elizabeth I. It reads: “vanity of vanities, all is vanity.”

I figured this is appropriate based on the recent migration from the hell site.

“Oh blue skies,
Smiling at me,
Nothing but blue skies,
Do I see”

New here? Slide that switch and write Alt Text on your images! It really works to help you not forget!
You can also make sure you never forget by telling Bluesky to never let you post without it. Under “accessibility” in the settings menu is a toggle to force alt text on images before posting:

I’m literally begging big newspapers to send science reporters to do science stories. HHS is a science story. Fluoride and vaccines and raw milk and H5N1…just, politics and opinion desks, love y’all to death, but let your colleagues who know the terrain take point.

LGBTQ voters went 86% for Harris. Attacking them, and especially trans people as the reason for losing the election is electoral suicide. They make up 7% of voters. Without them, every single democratic senator that won would've lost.

Every fucking expletive
New GOP House Speaker Mike Johnson this week claimed that Roe V. Wade unjustly allowed women to choose NOT to give birth to “able bodied workers in the economy,” which is why everything is so expensive.

Very cool, very normal, very forced-birth eugenics

I'm genuinely surprised I don't see this scene referenced more often. It may not seem like a big deal now, but this was quite the stand to take in the 1960s. It's always important to consider art in the context of the time and culture in which it was created. What's ordinary now was radical then.

Stephen Miller in an interview this past week talked about mass deportations including naturalized citizens. Unlike the magical thinking among Trump voters that such plans never pertain to them - I am aware 'deporting naturalized citizens' is a plan that would include me, and many of my students
I think people (as with most policies) underestimate how many people abolishing birthright citizenship would affect.

For example, it would affect me and my siblings. It could also affect my kids, depending on specifics. It would affect the majority (not an exaggeration) of my students.
A thread on birthright citizenship I wrote in 2018, that unfortunately remains relevant.

I always thought this was where it was all headed. Abolishing birthright citizenship for the non-white and non-rich. And why I teach on United States v. Wong Kim Ark every semester.

Who was Wong Kim Ark? 1/

Brain: No work. Cheese.
Me: We just had some cheese.
Brain: I see no cheese.
Me: That's because we ate it.
Brain: (stares blankly)
Me: (sighs) Look, if I get you more cheese can we work?
Brain: Yes.
(gives brain cheese)
Me: Okay. Work.
