The thing about right wing deregulation is somehow it is always about making it easier to drill for oil in national parks and never about making it a bit easier to build housing or connections to solar farms

Utterly surreal that a key part of the pre Budget narrative from the government hasn’t been ‘Russian planes keep buzzing the Essex coast, US support for NATO is looking shaky, and thanks to the Tories our army fits in Old Trafford - that’s why we need to raise taxes’.

I wish I didn’t have to share this. But the BBC has decided to censor my first Reith Lecture.

They deleted the line in which I describe Donald Trump as “the most openly corrupt president in American history.” /1

One thing that is not getting enough attention is that Trump has normalized the idea of the United States supporting the transfer of territory and millions of people from a democracy to a dictatorship.
The ending of freedom for millions is now the official US position.

Trump’s rehabilitation of Putin sends the message to others that if you bully your neighbours you will be rewarded with propaganda wins like the red carpet treatment he gave Putin. You may even be rewarded with new territory & the ability to meddle in other nation’s constitution

Those who say Trump is doing something where others sat on the sidelines, sure, but since he’s been president, attacks on Ukraine have only increased - dramatically so. Putin couldn’t even keep a lid on it during the bizarre bro-fest in Alaska, bombs literally fell as they met

Attention is on NEETs today, but the problem is much worse.

NEETs include stay-at-home parents & jobseekers.

Strip those out to focus on people not working, not seeking work, not in education & not parenting: this group of economically & socially dislocated young adults has *doubled* in a decade.

Please, anything but that.

The basic problem with the temporary refugee status policy - especially one lasting up to 20 years - is it leads to very few removals (based on Denmark's experience) but does significantly worsen integration.

Don't think there's any doubt it would have been incredibly unpopular.

The relevant questions are a) will the tax rises they do instead be more or less unpopular and b) would it allow them to do things that made them look more competent in three years' time.
Quite a contrast to the BlueSky consensus the last 24 hours
Do you think the government was right or wrong to decide not to raise income tax at the Budget?

Right: 58%
Wrong: 21%

There is a small subset of pro-Starmer ultras on here who either genuinely don’t understand that budget stories *are directly briefed out by the Treasury, with permission* or pretend not to know that. And so they claim the plans never existed, haven’t changed, etc. It is maddening, and dumb as fuck.

What you have to understand is that Labour had to make the tax pledge so they would win a majority of 500 instead of 80, which was essential so they could…????

The principle that we all contribute to high quality public services and a welfare safety net is a good one. Solidarity is a virtue. It’s not progressive nor left-wing to attack it as a principle. We all contribute, but those with the broadest shoulders contribute the most.

These geniuses *really* think it takes two to tango, when it comes to war, don't they?
"Hey, I'm declaring war on you"
"I don't want a war!"
"Ah crap well no war, I guess, then."
