Again: Faith leaders *themselves* have long also criticized "thoughts and prayers" rhetoric — including leader's Leavitt's own Catholic tradition.

Here are some examples from the past 24 hours, including a statement from Sisters of Mercy of the Americas (Catholic nuns) on the shooting.
Sisters of Mercy Statement on Minnesota Catholic school shooting Today, during the first week of the school year, as children at Annunciation Catholic School in Minneapolis gathered for Mass, a gunman opened fire through the windows of the Church. Two young children were killed and many more were injured; some are in critical condition. The gunman took his own life. The education of children has always been central to our mission as Sisters of Mercy. Many of our sisters have spent their lives in classrooms and have formed young minds, hearts and souls. We deeply grieve today's actions. Our response can no longer be "thoughts and prayers" alone. Children were literally praying during the attack. Our Critical Concern of non-violence underlies our lives and ministry as sisters. We must address this culture of violence with a culture of love. As followers of the nonviolent Christ, we continue to advocate for laws that keep weapons out of the hands of those intent on harm. Guns remain the number one killer of our children and teens. We must act. The obsession with the gun ownership in the United States has denigrated our ability to respect the image of God and human dignity of all persons. We call on our lawmakers and all persons of goodwill to work towards and pray for an end to violence. In response to the shooting in Minneapolis, Rabbi Jonah Dov Pesner, Director of the Religious Action Center of Reform Judaism, released the following statement: "We are heartbroken by the tragic shooting at Annunciation Catholic School in Minneapolis. We pray for a refuah shleimah (a complete healing) for the injured and mourn the two children who were killed. May their loved ones find comfort, and may their memories forever be a blessing. Today, another community is shattered, and more families are in mourning. How many people must experience the terror of gun violence before lawmakers take meaningful action? Thoughts and prayers will never be enough; indeed, the victims themselves were children at prayer. Congress must take immediate action to stop gun violence." Statement of Cardinal Blase J. Cupich, archbishop of Chicago, on the School Shooting in Minnesota August 27, 2025 I have been following news reports on the shooting at Annunciation Church and School in Minnesota. While events are still unfurling, what we know now is that two children ages & and 10 were killed and 17 persons were injured, 14 of them children. Two children are in critical condition. While such shootings have sadly become commonplace, this one hits close to home, not only because it occurred at a Catholic school, but also because the gunman shot through the windows of a church where children and their teachers were praying at the start of a new school year. If any place should have been safe, it should have been there. If any time should have been safe, it should have been then. Tragically, we know no place or time when Americans - even children - are safe from the curse of gun violence. While we join our prayers with others that those injured in body and spirit will heal and that the murdered children will be received into heaven, we must also cry out for action to prevent even one more such tragedy. The facts are clear. Guns are plentiful and common sense attempts to limit their availability have been largely rejected in the name of a freedom not found in our constitution. Cutbacks in funding for health care and social service programs will only exacerbate a national mental health crisis and increase alienation. We therefore pray for those who hold the power to make the safety of our people a national priority. We ask God to give them the courage to take the steps they know will alleviate if not eliminate the fear parents must feel sending their children off to school and Americans feel leaving their homes for simple errands. Surely they must be moved by these shootings. We pray that they will not see them as inevitable because then we will have certainly surrendered our rights to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. Please pray and please act…

CONFIRMED: the thoughts and prayers offered by politicians following Columbine, Sandy Hook, Parkland (and far too many others) all failed to prevent today's mass shooting at Annunciation Catholic School in Minneapolis.
