Shabana Mahmood tells Sunday Times it should take 20 years for somebody granted refugee status in UK to secure permanent status (ie, reapply 6 times) if came without permission.

Paper says Denmark has toughest settlement timeline (8 years) but UK govt wants longer

To state the eye-bleedingly obvious, Labour's line shouldn't be "We are going to be bastards, because otherwise worse bastards will come after us' it should be 'There are bastards going after vulnerable people, so we're throwing the whole weight of HMG into preventing the bastards from winning'.

Should David and Ed Miliband retrospectively be denied citizenship because Ralph should have been sent “back” (to Belgium? to Poland?)
Someone should ask Starmer and Mahmood whether they think the Kindertransport, for example, should have been a return ticket. Whether Alf Dubs, rather than becoming a Labour MP and now Lord, ought to have been sent back with his family to Czechoslovakia once it was liberated from German rule.
This contribution to the volume of human misery is yet another policy from Labour based on a false premise, in this case that refugees are overly attracted to Britain. It will increase bureaucratic limbo, thus making worse the problem of "cohesion" it purports to solve.

At some point, for the love of God, will someone ANYONE at long last take the council funding crisis seriously?!?

Because THIS is what will break down a society, not some poor soul escaping incredible dangers, arriving on our shores.

Surely it's been obvious for years the BBC board isn't a force for good? The Tories stuffed it with ultra right wingers, and even before that the BBC were entranced by Nigel Farage, Boris Johnson, Nick Griffin etc, and allowed through some shockingly ignorant cobblers in programmes like Panorama.
The BBC needs to urgently review its board structure as to its ability to respond to an existential threat. There are multiple credible reports that board members involved in its response aren’t on-side. There are allegations some leaked. And the response has been slow and disjointed throughout.

Could they have done any worse?

Would they be in a worse electoral position now if they had gotten into power an said ‘right we are taking steps to rejoin the EU.’

Or if they had told Trump to go F himself in the trade deal.

I’m not convinced they would be.
