Remembering Alice Wong: Writer, Advocate, Friend
Though we were in frequent conversation for a decade, I only got to meet my friend Alice Wong in person just once. And when I did, I  was a bundle of nerves—and that was before she cussed me out wi…

Our beloved Alice Wong has joined the ancestors. It was one of the great honors of my life to call Alice my friend, co-author & co-conspirator. She was a true genius, a force of nature the likes of which the world has never seen before. I love you, Alice, and am equal parts grateful and devastated

I don’t want to formulate words yet, but my friend Alice Wong, @sfdirewolf.bsky.social of the Disability Visibility Project, has passed.

My latest is a love letter to Chicago. "I see you stumbling through the stubborn, awkward rhythm of showing up, again and again. I see you fighting alongside people who sometimes frustrate and confuse you, and defending neighbors you may have never met, because you know they’re all your people."
In Chicago, We Run Toward Danger Together
"Faced with unrelenting state violence, Chicagoans have refused to be cowed," says Mariame Kaba.

Righteous anger is different from mendacious anger.....
Being mean just because you can will always be the weakest sauce.
Using rage to stand up for what's right is will always be worth it .

It's Shirley Jackson's birthday today, and so it's a perfect opportunity to recommend my favourite story of hers, THE SUMMER PEOPLE. It's a subtle horror, quietly creeping up behind you until it lays a cold hand on your shoulder. I love it very much. It's only 13 pages and you can read it here:

The most haunting line from Faeries (Froud and Lee, 1979):

“The spirit of the birch tree is called ‘The One with the White Hand’. If it touches a head, it leaves a vivid white mark and inflicts madness, but if it touches a heart, it is the touch of Death.”

In Slavic folklore, Leshy is the owner of the woods.

Some say, he takes away cursed and unwanted newborns, and keeps them as pets… and when his "pets" die, Leshy devours their corpses.

A bit of a curiosity for today’s #GothicAdvent. In 1964 for Sears Catalogue, Vincent Price (who worked as a consultant for Sears 1962-71) was part of a Christmas advertising campaign. You could decorate your own tree like the great man himself. #VincentPrice

I was recently given a large collection of glass negatives by a friend whose Great Aunt had died. Unidentifiable, and found in a damp shed I believe. Some extraordinary images.
