An excellent talk from Derek Muller about how learning works and the possible impacts AI has on that learning. It was wonderful to see somebody be so excited about AI but also critical of it, understanding that AI has a huge potential to weaken learning if used incorrectly.

I was recently asked what my teaching values are, and like many others I responded: "to make a difference"

"Yeah, but what difference?"

When my students leave my class, I want them to be better problem solvers, not just in computing, but in all aspects of life

we got a free desk today, and we're using it as a base to set up a very cheap family desktop, because I believe it is somehow helpful for children to have a The Computer, so they can argue about whose turn it is to use The Computer

One thing I love about being a #CompSci teacher and the #Crochet teacher is noticing how much the two have in common. Pattern recognition, algorithm design and error checking all wrapped up a ball of yarn.

Working through some PD and found it quite refreshing to see the use of the internet spoken about in a positive light. The internet has the power to inspire creativity and foster communication. It shouldn't be locked away because it is harmful. Educate, not confiscate.

Took a leaf out of my #teaching playbook to make my #DnD combat more fun. Each player chooses a unique number between 2 & 19. Whenever another player rolls that number on an attack, you can either add your own D20 to the attack roll or add your damage modifier to the damage.

Ohhh. Today's bluesky lesson, the default chat settings are to only accept chats from Users I follow (rather than everyone!). I love that this is the default... but had wondered why my DM's were so quiet. Now I know.

This might be helpful for other #coaches or #lifecoaches out in the sky!

Feel like I'm going to be working on this one for a while, but I bet it should be a pretty sweet bag when it's finished

Me: "So as you can see comments are not for the computer to read they're just for..."

Student: "Style points!"

Me: "Yes, comments are for style points"

I've never had a class so engaged in writing code comments before.

I am learning that relying on "research-based practices" is not enough. We need to use research to help us understand local evidence of impact.

Looking closely at what is working in OUR context with OUR students and is backed by research is the true north ✨ for students.

It's so important that we're teaching computational thinking skills alongside LLM use. Decomposition and abstraction are vitally important in any field, not just #CompSci

The notebook sweet spot is so small.
Like the chances of finding one that's nice enough to buy but not too nice to ruin by writing in it are basically zero. Madness. This world is absolute madness.

Hey #crochet ! This is one of my first ever projects I made for my son when he was only 2 months old. I learned how to crochet specifically so I could make toys for him.

Side note: Any advice on how to take better photos of my projects?

I've noticed a trend where students who play more traditional full length games tend to be more prepared for computational thinking challenges. This is all to say I strongly desire to make Tears of the Kingdom a "critical reading" for my CompSci students #edusky #compsci #totk

Ah the joys of introducing students to the wonderful world of data entry. My students have been tasked with helping create the database for the school library. When asked to reflect on what they did today, one student said "I've never used the keypad so much in my life" #dataentry #compsci #edusky
