Brilliant news!! Leaving the EU was one of the worst acts of political and economic self-harm. I’m still annoyed it was passed through on an advisory referendum. The sooner we get back in, the better. Also, note to all levels of the education sector: Stop Cutting Language Courses!!!
Nick Thomas-Symonds MP announces that the UK is rejoining Erasmus+. 🎉

"It will open up world class opportunities for students, teachers, youth workers, sports sector professionals and communities of all ages."

Seeing as FIFA and the US govt seem intent on ruining the World Cup I’ll definitely be boycotting. Wish they’d move all the games to Canada and Mexico. Wouldn’t go to the US now even if you paid me.

This reminds me of the scene with the melting Nazi in Indiana Jones. Trump already looks like he’s melting with that dreadful fake tan.
in the movies this is the screensaver on the computers at the world’s most evil company

Ok, I vaguely remember this Faith Evans song. Didn’t recognise any of the others in this episode. #TOTP

I was in France in 1998. Don’t remember hearing any of this stuff. Doesn’t look like I missed much. The stuff i heard in France was much more memorable. #TOTP

Mat leave is going ok. Have to take each day as it comes, but we’re ok so far. Taking part in my 5th bit of scientific research tomorrow. Some work on babies brains and the effects of growing up in a multilingual household.

I have at least one family member in the east of this map and possibly another in the west. I’d like mass dna testing to help identify the remains of people from both sides of the conflict. Don’t think that will ever happen.
New map produced by RTVE, Spanish national TV, of the 6000 mass graves in Spain. In the last 25 years some 17,000 bodies of men, women and children have been exhumed out of the ~120,000 dumped in mass unmarked graves by the Franco regime.

The level of discourse amongst the political elites in the US is just unreal. Not planning on going back to the US for a long time so I can say that I speak several languages at home, and could politely tell Vance to F off in more than six.
Vance says it is "totally reasonable and acceptable" for people to not want to live next door to people who speak a different language than they do

Threads is dreadful. The algorithm keeps putting antivaxxers and people who are unsure about vaccines on my feed, which drives me absolutely potty. Life is too short to be educating these people.

I love a long distance train trip!!
Leaving #Sicily 🇮🇹 for northern #Italy on this #InterCityNotte, a genuine “cross-country” long distance sleeper service. About 22 hours, if one travels all the way from either #Siracusa or #Palermo through to #Milan.
Settling into the sleeper cabin, which is still in daytime “sofa” configuration.

More evidence that the #climate emergency affects *everything* - it should be front & centre of ALL government decisions. As well as serious adaptation (petition here petition.parliament.uk/petitions/7300…) Govt must urgently stop making things worse eg greenlighting high carbon airport expansion

The Renters Rights Bill has finished going through the House of Lords and will soon become law - great news that renters will now get the basic protections they desperately need

But it barely does a thing on affordability, so now time to tackle that by bringing in rent controls

Wilfred refers back to the prewar refugees to UK and kindertransport and says, "Back then, it was different."

It wasn't. It was the very definition of a hostile environment for refugees.

The reason it was "kinder" transport was because hate was whipped up against adults fleeing Nazi Germany. 1/2

"Covering a war means going to places torn by chaos, destruction and death... It means trying to find the truth in a sandstorm of propaganda" - the late Marie Colvin.

Truth is the cornerstone of justice. Without it we can't start to hold those responsible to account. Let journalists into Gaza.
The Rafah crossing is expected to re-open.

Alongside the desperately needed aid, journalists must be allowed into Gaza.

Over 200 journalists have been killed in Gaza - but the crimes of the Israeli government and military must not go undocumented.

Let the journalists in.
