Love to see car with Illinois plates FM 81849 parked in the crosswalk at Leland and Hamilton

How petty is it to send this to the alderperson?

Finally, the most distinct characteristic of Anthropocene fossils, whether human, animal, plant, or even mineral formations, is the presence of microplastics incorporated into their structure. Curiously, the best-preserved fossils are precisely those with the lowest concentration of microplastics.

I find this discussion of Iowa City's free bus to be interesting. I am a proud alum of the University of Iowa and a former bus driver for the university's bus system, Cambus. So, naturally, I have a few thoughts.

from time to time i still encounter this kinda reductive old deviantart attitude that anime/manga styles are flat/unrealistic and that Ghibli mostly is the only grounded, naturalistic anime style. all styles have, obey and break different rules. none of these are unstructured or lawless

This is a great article to keep in mind if the Museum of the City of New York ever comes around demanding your (unpaid) labor, historians, or asking for cash donations.
"The director of the Museum of the City of New York, Stephanie Hill Wilchfort, said she no longer needs to hire copy editors to work on annual reports. [She is turning to AI.]"

This should be embarrassing to admit.

No institution or person who caved or caves to Trump can ever be fully trusted again. This includes many universities and the people who run them and the owners of many news orgs. Remember their names and deeds.
*Every single* institution, organization, and individual who caved into Trump already looks worse for having done so.

And every one that stood up continues to look better.
Man, CBS must feel really stupid right now!

Just kidding, CBS wasn't settling a lawsuit. They were paying a bribe and they knew it.

"it is forcing me to be guarded when I should be wowed"

This.

This right here.

I'm so, SO tired of having to scrutinize any piece of art that even remotely resembles genAI slop just to determine whether or not it's worth a second thought or any admiration.
Why am I so against generative AI in games?

Because I simply do not want my initial reaction to art to be one of suspicion and scrutiny, AI slop is fundamentally damaging my relationship to art and artistry, and I am deeply resentful that it is forcing me to be guarded when I should be wowed.

every author in the class action, please file the claim.
AI advocates have warned that if every author in the class action filed a claim, it would "financially ruin" the entire industry.
Authors celebrate “historic” settlement coming soon in Anthropic class action
Advocates fear such settlements will “financially ruin” the AI industry.

At a certain point you have to realize that calling them incompetent for failing to achieve their stated goals only provides cover for their unstated goals, which are not particularly hard to deduce and have been achieved beyond their wildest dreams

One of the root causes of complex PTSD is experiencing a horrible series of events over time and not having anyone validate it, or indeed deny it was important. It’s almost impossible to integrate a traumatic experience without your social groups accepting that it occurred and that it mattered.
sometimes it will just hit me that over a million americans died from covid in a short period of time and we never had a national mourning. we never collectively grieved. we never honored the dead. this feels like a failure
