"Throughout all of this pushback & opposition, Vancouver experienced an authentic bike boom, with the mode share increasing by nearly 300%. An impressive 10% of trips to work are now made by bike, one of the highest rates in North America. Women now make up nearly half of all trips made by bicycle."
When newly-elected Vancouver Mayor Gregor Robertson started converting car lanes to bike lanes in 2009, pundits claimed it was political suicide. In 2018, he stepped down after three terms as the longest-serving mayor in the city's history. So what can this tale teach us about so-called "bikelash"?🧵

A pejorative portmanteau of street and road: an expensive, dangerous, and ugly design that tries to be both a high-speed commuter road and destination street with businesses, failing at both while being equally frustrating for drivers, cyclists, and pedestrians.
Stroad - Wikipedia

No city in Canada has a “laissez-faire” housing system.

They all strictly regulate what you can build and where. Montreal is a little better (less single-family zoning) but it’s still true here.

When you limit the supply of housing below demand, what happens?

We’re doing this to ourselves.
“Montreal verges on losing one of its most attractive features: affordability. Recent news that rents in Montreal have doubled since 2019 reveal that the city hasn’t taken hard enough action against the greed that’s undermining housing affordability.”

Apparently it was a parade in DC.
