White maths is pitched as being necessary for life and a window into beautiful thought inherited from important men. It's then taught as a series of operations to be got right/wrong in an exam which is labelled as "basic" and used to bar a % of the population from further education and certain jobs

Trump just said:
Trump suggests Khashoggi had it coming: "You're mentioning someone that was extremely controversial. A lot of people didn't like that gentleman that you're talking about. Whether you like him or didn't like him, things happen. But he knew nothing about it. You don't have to embarrass our guest."

This shouldn’t need saying; it should be so obvious.
Have been thinking about “immigration has been tearing this country apart.” Surely I’m not the only person to think that it isn’t true, but inflamed rhetoric about immigration by politicians is what is tearing this country apart and so statements like that only makes it worse.

I’ve written a piece on the curious lack of media and political interest in the issues faced by our national @britishlibrary.bsky.social. This is strange given we live in a world where ideas, knowledge and research are a long-term source of innovation and insight

The British library is in crisis: why does nobody care?
The widespread indifference to the British Library's crippling cyberattack demonstrates a perilous failure to value the knowledge infrastructure vital for national prosperity

¿Por qué decimos “buenos días” además de “buen día”?

Very on brand. This is what French past and present in Africa looks like. Profane desecration and depraved inhumanity.
Soldiers based at French energy giant TotalEnergies gas plant rounded up 500 villagers, separated men from women & children, raped several women, then crammed 180 to 250 men into windowless metal shipping containers.

The men were were suffocated, starved, beaten, shot over 3 months. 26 survived.
TotalEnergies accused of complicity in war crimes over Mozambique container massacre
French legal complaint claims the firm paid and supplied soldiers who carried out mass killings first uncovered by POLITICO.

After almost 37 years of French study (is it still "study" after that long?) it amazes me how much new vocabulary I still pull out of a novel while reading. 🇫🇷 #langsky #French #français

it's so deeply rude to answer someone's question with the output from a chatbot, or even to reference prompting the chatbot. they asked a person for a reason. if they wanted to see what output the chatbot would barf out, they could get it themselves.

This book from @versobooks.bsky.social is interesting to think with.
"The Eye of the Master" argues that the code of AI is shaped not by the imitation of biological intelligence, but the intelligence of labour and social relations, as it is found in Babbage's "calculating engines" of the industrial age & in recent algorithms for image recognition and surveillance.
The Eye of the Master
What is AI? A dominant view describes it as the quest "to solve intelligence" - a solution supposedly to be found in the secret logic of the mind or in the deep physiology of the brain, such as in its...
