Back in A&E.

Still in pain. Have lost 2 or 3 kg in two days, cause I can’t eat or drink from the pain and nausea... and I am quite yellow.

It looks like jaundice.

I am exhausted, these last three days feel like a month.

Aprendiendo is nearly always used after the verb estar (I think)

E.g. Estoy aprendiendo, estaba aprendiendo etc.

Ando and iendo are like "ing" in English.

Ok ginger (in Spanish ”jenjibre”) tea strikes again, it’s sorted me right out!
Pain: gone; nausea: gone; liquids: in. I can breathe again!

Please, wash your hands more and take care.

Some of us with chronic crap take a beating out of “normal“ stuff.

Christmas morning spent in the emergency room and Boxing day in high discomfort and pain…

Unexpected, but unsurprising.

No, omg so grateful to learn this word! And we definitely need something like this in English! 😆

Cantinflear: Speaking or acting in a nonsensical and incongruous manner and saying nothing of substance.

Just saw that Chat GPT and Perplexity have crawled my post on journaling in Spanish to respond to queries a number of times.

I have mixed feelings, but they get less mixed if I think my work may not have been mentioned as a source.

Any advice?

Fun fact- a lot of edtech creates gambling habits in children - and Duolingo and times tables rockstars (as well as Roblox (not edtech) ) are good examples but not the only offenders
Streaks, leagues, playing for points you can “spend”.. all of it should be as illegal as ads for sugary cereal are.

I’m a little bit blown away at how incredibly educational and helpful www.languagetransfer.org/courses has been.
I’ve been struggling with finding a beginner course for learning Spanish; I wish I found this sooner.

Stan's theme has been today's earworm. In Spanish we say "se me ha pegado" = it's stuck to me

Hoy se me ha pegado la canción de Stan. En inglés a las canciones que se pegan se les llama "earworm" = gusano de oído.

Today I’ve been to a really cool bookstore called “Manolo no sabe que es un gato“ (Manolo doesn’t know he is a cat).

The owner and I have spent some time praising each other’s weird business name 😅

They're also missing out on a deep potential source of joy. Alcachofa is the word for both an artichoke and a shower head. I don't know what else you could ask for in a language. Also connecting with hispanohablantes in their own language is great, actually

Per Mark Davies (2005), ~4,000 words covers 90% of words heard in 'typical' conversation in Spanish.

2600 nouns
980 adjectives
230 verbs
50 adverbs
~ 3800 total forms plus 200 function words (determiners, prepositions, conjunctions, etc)

~2000 words (50 verbs) covers 80%

A student who used to get nervous when speaking, used to hate being told "Say something in Spanish!", so I taught him the expression:

"No soy un mono de feria" = I'm not a performing monkey

Today he told me he finally got to use it with friends and everyone laughed when he translated ❤️
