I do think the key for things like Home Alone, Muppet Christmas Carol, etc. is that the actors fully commit to the bit

I feel like similar films made now lean too heavily into doing it ironically

Huh weird that now liberals are desperate for an Edward Snowden or Chelsea Manning or Reality Winner to leak the unredacted Epstein Files.

Perhaps if they hadn't lined up with the establishment in demanding maximum repression of whistleblowers back then, leakers would be more forthcoming.

I’m sure churches did food banks when I was a kid but I do not recall hearing the words “food bank” until the 2010s. About three million people rely on them now and it’s not even a problem, let alone a crisis. And that’s how easy it was to just revoke your living standards, without any great fuss.
Sophy Ridge to someone from Trussell: "Can I just ask, demand for food banks is going up and this is often seen as a negative thing basically, that it shows that more people are in need turning to food banks. Could you flip that and say its a good thing..."

er, no.

Everyone needs to listen to Gustav Holst's "The Planets", not for hoity-toity nerd reasons, but because every epic sci-fi movie OST for the past century has been directly lifting shit from this one specific collection of pieces, and you deserve to hear your favourite motif in its native environment.

This is why I say the British press is so much more poisonous than e.g. Fox News. Fox might be wackier and more insulting, but alternatives are available. In Britain, this is everything: all channels, all day, every day of the year. Unrelenting.

You feel like you’re going absolutely fucking nuts, paying close attention to events and to the way they’re covered. But it’s not you, it’s because there are tacitly agreed stories and specific goals, and reality must be forced to bend and break, to fit into these existing structures.

The very sharp disjuncture between reading the executive summary of the EHRC Labour report; then reading the actual text of the Labour report, and then reading what the press were telling the public was in the EHRC Labour report. Then noting the chasm between the allegations, and what was found.

My dad abhors any negative comments about immigrants. Asked him recently why he’s so strong on it: ‘Because we’re always happy to take the rich and clever ones. Which means it’s not about disliking immigrants. It’s about disliking the poor and vulnerable. And that’s a bad human instinct.’
This is so disgusting.

I asked someone why bosses get 100x the pay when they don't do 100x the work.

They said 'because they take 100x the risk'.

No they don't. The point of a ltd company (a 200+ yr old innovation) separates business liability from personal to *limit* risk.

If the worker doesn't get paid, they starve.

The Express is furious about this because the moment you show those who repeat anti-immigration rhetoric the real human stories their narrative collapses.

The “immigrants” are people. Our friends, colleagues and family.

And it’s this nation of neighbours that is what makes Britain great.

The reason the top 10% of income earners pay more than half of all tax revenue is NOT because they are taxed more than ever.

Their tax rate has been cut FIVE times in the last 25 years.

They are paying more because their INCOME has increased astronomically, where the income of the bottom half has

It is IMO not possible to operate any kind of meaningful democracy when your national press is a joke and a travesty, but your mileage on that may vary. I think it’s incontestable that it is impossible to govern well and effectively, while being in hock to these pantomime clowns.

I get a surprisingly large number of responses saying “This is because the public are stupid” but for real, if that was the key issue, then it wouldn’t be necessary to constantly shitehouse people with the most misleading and inflammatory messages they can get away with. There would be no need.

Labour's growing authoritarianism is deeply sinister.

This week, they've:
- Swapped judges last minute in the high-profile Palestine Action ban review
- Proposed removing the right of trial by jury for most offences
- Planned to abolish appeals in the asylum system

You cannot satisfy demands made to deal with 'the problems of immigration' because immigration itself does not cause these problems.

They are caused by the same people who retain power in neoliberal society: exploitative bosses, landlords, state elites enforcing austerity, etc etc.

Trial by jury is a cornerstone of our democracy and an essential safeguard against authoritarianism.

It is truly frightening that such a fundamental freedom is now under attack.

Once rights are lost, they are not easy to win back. We must resist this with all we’ve got.
