Octavia E. Butler signed this copy of Parable of the Sower for my late mother, Patricia Stephens Due.

The power of these Black women inspired me to write an essay after Tr*mp's inauguration in 2017. I've reposted a slightly revised version I hope will bring you hope today.

Surviving President Tr*mp: Lessons from the 1960s and Octavia E. Butler
I originally wrote this essay to coincide with the inauguration of Donald Trump on January 20, 2017. It deeply grieves me to publish it…

Beautifully written book despite the brutally horrific subject matter. Best book I read in quite some time.
Due is a master wordsmith.

Seriously.
agreeing to make a terrible deal while your main opponent is quite literally being boo'd on live tv by an entire stadium of people is the kind of political instinct you'd normally only find in a 3 week old dead goldfish

Anyway a great way to radicalize people is for them to realize that you just abandoned their chance at being able to access and afford health care because you didn’t like waiting in line at the airport.

I'll be honest, I lost interest in GDT's FRANKENSTEIN when I learned it would be ignoring an integral part of the original novel.

I knew this wouldn't last. It was too good to be true. But it doesn't change that @leximcmenamin.com is one of my favorite political reporters and I will be a faithful reader. We need to figure out our own media economy...there isn't a single honest MSM outlet left
I was laid off from Teen Vogue today along with multiple other staffers, and today is my last day.

certainly more to come from me when the dust has settled more, but to my knowledge, after today, there will be no politics staffers at Teen Vogue.

I’ve just finished “The Reformatory” by @tananarivedue.bsky.social, a novel about the horror of racial injustice in Jim Crow Florida. The writing is incredibly immersive, the characters beautifully developed. By the final act, the stakes were so high that I could hardly breathe till I finished it.

A collection of stories that range from apocalyptic to horror to afrofuturism. The stories connect via recurring characters or places, such as Nayima (featured in several stories) and Gracetown (setting of The Reformatory.)
