Languishing with a cold for days now. I wish I’d felt up to watching more films in that time! Tonight we stepped away from the horror genre to give “A House of Dynamite” a go and it was a complete waste of time. I’m quite angry I lost almost two hours to it. #FilmSky

There were things I really enjoyed about the new “Frankenstein”, not least how beautiful it is to look at. But a choice was made to have no moral complexity in the depiction of Victor and his Creature. The overall Disneyfied vibe ultimately made it perfect TV viewing for a Sunday afternoon. #FilmSky

I really shouldn't share bad ai, but the fact that they're pretending to have animated it all by hand is extraordinary. Anyone who has done digital animation will be flabbergasted at the audacity.
Mirroring the video here if you don't want to even humor going onto Twitter, but when it gets into the "process" section, there's so many red flags of them lying about the work they put into the commercial that reveal how much of this video is them trying and lying after the fact.

The Fast Show Live this evening at the Cambridge Corn Exchange was a lot of fun. Nostalgia, silliness and an insane number of classic characters and catchphrases. Niiiiice.

Went to see Bugonia. A bonkers experience, as I’d expect and hope from Yorgos Lanthimos. The dramatic tonal shifts mostly worked, though I really wasn’t expecting the chunky knitwear. #FilmSky

Great poses from our amazing model at last night’s life drawing session. I go every Wedneday evening and I believe I’m getting better at it.

Watching the Discovering Film bunch talk about horror. Why are they always so completely humourless?

There are some surprisingly cool things to see at this little exhibition at Moyse’s Museum in Bury St Edmunds! Props, models & memorabilia from Indiana Jones, Star Wars, James Bond, Jurassic Park, Lord of the Rings, The Crown, Blade Runner, Batman, & Jaws. My favourite was the vial of Quint’s blood.

I’ve just finished “The Reformatory” by @tananarivedue.bsky.social, a novel about the horror of racial injustice in Jim Crow Florida. The writing is incredibly immersive, the characters beautifully developed. By the final act, the stakes were so high that I could hardly breathe till I finished it.

Rewatched “Heretic”. The genius of having Hugh Grant portray an evil character by simply playing himself. He’s a creep. He’s a weirdo! This film (not unlike The Wicker Man) mocks the unquestioning nature of religious belief while at the same time taking it deadly seriously. An all-timer #HorrorSky

Been doing some portrait practice in gouache. Since we’re 2/3 of the way through a rewatch of one of my favourite TV series ever, Penny Dreadful, I thought I’d have a go at painting Vanessa Ives.

A bit of a long shot but does anyone know of a wheelchair accessible photography studio for hire in London? I'm trying to plan a couple of studio shoots but finding it hard finding anywhere to shoot

This weekend's scifi-horror watches were: Totally Killer (2023), self-aware Scream/Back To The Future mashup that I found surprisingly fun and original; and The Crazies (2010), about a virus whose symptoms varied a lot depending on the needs of the plot (but it wasn't bad, and had Timothy Olyphant).

Today I was in the room where it happens! The Victoria Palace is a gorgeous theatre and Hamilton is a very impressive show. Loved it.

Saw “The Wicker Man” on the big screen tonight, thanks to Ely Community Cinema. With each rewatch of this masterpiece, I find Sergeant Howie’s increasing frustration with the islanders more comedic, and that ending (the most upsetting in horror cinema, for my money) ever more devastating. #HorrorSky

Very much enjoyed “Le Vourdalak”, from the 1970s euro-horror effect of the soft film grain to the use of a puppet, which gave things a proper old-fashioned fairytale feel. It’s not “scary”, but it’s dark and icky and funny too. #HorrorSky

Infected wisdom tooth = many hours spent languishing on the sofa clocking up October horror miles. So far I’ve watched Drag Me To Hell, Gretel & Hansel, Butterfly Kisses, I Am The Pretty Thing That Lives In The House, and All You Need Is Death. #HorrorSky

It was fun to catch up with my friend Isa this morning for coffee and sketching. (It was very much a case of no perspective, just vibes.)

People responding to a post about horror movies with something along the lines of ‘if you want real horror just turn on the news’ seem really unaware, - and incurious - about why people watch horror. I think people watch horror films precisely because the horror isn’t real.
If you see people having fun discussing horror movies, don't do this. It's not witty. It's not helpful, and it's certainly not original. At best, it's INCREDIBLY annoying, and at worst, it sounds like you're shaming someone for daring to not think about politics 24/7. Either way, you're an asshole.
