I've been to some of these, and they're all excellent centres to communicate STEM to the public. They only need a little govt money to keep on doing good work! Consider signing:
For over 25 years, science and discovery centres have been at the heart of inspiring millions of people to explore, question, and be part of UK science and technology.

But they're seriously under threat… 1/3

This is interesting! There used to be an app called iFootpath a bit like this which was amazing for previewing curated routes, but it got sold and gutted. This being a charity might be more sustainable, and might give me something to do on a weekend!

Another adventure by train! This time to Finland, and cheating later by taking a ferry... Eurostar to Brussels for moules fries and beers, then to wonderful Copenhagen with its parks and harbourside (where the French carrier gave us a salute)...

New review out from one of our talented alumni, Ed Adams, looking at current and novel treatments for Chronic Mountain Sickness 🩸⛰️
A lovely piece of writing that will help inform future research directions for this neglected disease.

Agree with most of this advice - though mainly, if you've not read Terry you should. Now. Go. Put down the phone.

Night Watch definitely a fave. And his biography a core text for the fan.

We seem to be moving to "tyranny of the majority" - if 52% of people wants something actively harmful to the other 48%, is that still democracy?

It's even worse that that majority is often an ephemeral 'will of the people' and, like Brexit, is votes for soundbites rather than considered policies.
on this; something I find disturbing is this assumption that if enough people want something then they should be able to get it - was that belief always there? understand no one wants to come across as overly patrician but if 60% of people wanted a cat as president, would we let the cat stand?
there's apparently now a view in every right-leaning British publication that nothing ought to be done about the far right, ever - they should be able to say whatever they want and do whatever they want, yet remain untouchable, and it's becoming increasingly hard not to parse it as outright support

Feels like Today programme finally gave up challenging guests when Mishal Husain left. With the changes to Newsnight does feel like the BBC has given up it's role in UK life, at least the Inform bit.
Stephen Moore from the Heritage Foundation runs through a whole load of Trumpist disinformation on #BBCToday

There is very little challenge, nobody debating with him, no attempt to fact check his nonsense

This is how fascism flourishes: because the gatekeepers fail in their essential role

🚨BREAKING - Steve Reed has just launched the biggest review into the water sector since privatisation.

But wait…..he says the commission can’t even consider public ownership. 🤯

We need to act quickly to change his mind. ⏰

1/8. This week I had a few different conversations with scholars who, in the face of the attacks on science and institutions of learning in the U.S., are wondering what to do. One suggestion I have is: keep doing your work. It matters in and of itself. Why do I say that? A few reasons.

Businesses (mostly) don't have a vote - who votes Labour for this? Who benefits? Who cares about 'growing the economy' if it trashes the environment, precipitates another financial crash, and hands power to the tech bros?

All while refusing to help young people with EU mobility and decent houses.
