I have embraced my persona of being the AI killjoy in my little corner of academia.
Yes, Becky, I think your AI "art" is shite.
No, Bob, Im not interested in using my students as guinea pigs for your LLM projects.
No, I will not be allowing the group to use ChatGPT to come up with survey questions.

It occurs to me that they misunderstand the meaning of "liberal" in a "liberal arts education." Don't they.

Economists have to go to school for so long because it is a very difficult field.

It takes a lot of time and energy to figure out a reason why paying poor people more money is bad for them.

i don't want to shop for healthcare, bargain hunt for produce, or any other stupid overcomplication of getting necessities that's forced on us by capitalist freaks who squeeze more cash out of every step in the process, including steps they just make up!

half-baked thought that’s been cooking a while, but i’ll say it anyway. the issue is that in uncritically accepting this, we accept mediocrity. ai is already as mediocre as its input. to say humans arent perfect either and to just give it a life/death power on a platter is just 🙃

“…over time, my beliefs will be changed by exposing myself to the responses of others. This is the process of communication and conversation, processes that are not a capacity of large language models given they have no intention working underneath the hood of their algorithm.”
While I was working on my book on writing and AI, I figured my experiments with ChatGPT/Claude will reveal use cases for the tools in my writing. In fact, the opposite happened. www.insidehighered.com/opinion/blog...

Ive always thought the wonderful thing about an education is that it gives you something that no one can take away from you; that it opens your eyes to the world around you. And finding teachers/admins who think that doesnt matter as much as getting on the AI bandwagon is so disheartening.
also the nice thing about learning how to do something yourself is that no one can take that skill away from you. but if *all* you know how to do is write a prompt and hit generate, you’re relying on infrastructure that can be restricted/censored—and tech companies that can go bankrupt—at anytime.
*required like… if the government requires AI verification or some shit like that that you literally can’t opt out of.

time to brush up on our writing, creative, and critical thinking skills, folks.
