I'll add one of my Mom's favorite techniques: She put all serving dishes/utensils into the dishwasher for a cycle timed to use just before we'd serve & sit down to dinner (trivets on wood dining table a must). All was squeaky clean and helped keep things hot. I used to think she was a bit much. Not.

The "Danger Zone" for food (bacteria grow like crazy) is between 40F and 140F, so keep hot foods hot and cold foods cold (more info below). Hot foods 2 hrs max before you need to refrigerate, cold foods can do 4 hrs
