Am Morgen des 10.11. brannten viele Synagogen noch. Straßen waren überzogen mit Glassplittern, Juden wurden durch Gassen getrieben, bespuckt, beschimpft, geschlagen - ermordet. Auch Kinder und Alte. Nicht nur in großen Städten. Es geschah nicht heimlich, sondern in aller Öffentlichkeit. (1)

Marthe Gautier: The Overlooked Discoverer of Down Syndrome’s Cause Marthe Gautier (1925–2022) was a French physician and researcher whose pioneering work led to the discovery that Down syndrome is caused by an extra chromosome—trisomy 21. Though her contribution was crucial, she was long denied proper recognition for one of the most important genetic breakthroughs of the 20th century. Gautier specialized in pediatric cardiology and pathology, but her growing interest in cell biology led her to set up a makeshift lab where she cultured cells from children with developmental disorders. Using a basic microscope and limited funding, she was the first to observe that children with Down syndrome had 47 chromosomes instead of the typical 46. In 1959, her findings were used—without proper credit—by geneticist Jérôme Lejeune, who published the discovery and became the face of the breakthrough. For decades, Gautier’s role was minimized or ignored. Only much later in life did she begin to receive acknowledgment for her foundational work, as historians and scientists revisited the origins of the discovery.
