For every $1 the IRS spends auditing the top 1%, it can collect $13.

For every $1 the IRS spends auditing the top 0.1%, it can collect $26.

Laying off 7,000 IRS employees (during tax season) isn't about efficiency.

It's about making it easier for the rich to evade taxes.

We think the world will always be how it is now. But I think we need to imagine a world in which there are too few migrants, and many more nations competing to attract them. This is the first in a series I'll be publishing about global migration. www.nytimes.com/2025/01/31/o...
Opinion | Migration Is Remaking Our World, and We Don’t Understand It at All (Gift Article)
Migration is central to our politics and our world, but nobody really understands it.

In 1970 the UK and Norway were roughly equal, almost no debt, and owned all their Public Services.

Now the UK owns nothing and has £3tn of debt.

While Norway still owns everything and has the equivilant of +£18.42tn.

That's how privatisation 'works'.

70k signatures to rejoin the EU. Big petition, timely too - polling shows the public is in favour. Let’s get it to 100k and push Labour to debate rejoining. It’s the glaringly obvious solution our economic problems and the rise of the far right.

Petition: Apply for the UK to join the European Union as a full member as soon as possible
I believe joining the EU would boost the economy, increase global influence, improve collaboration and provide stability & freedom. I believe that Brexit hasn't brought any tangible benefit and there ...

Interesting take. Simon goes on to point out that the 3 main news channels dropped coverage and didn’t pick it up again. I think it’s just as likely that Trump is trying to deflect blame from himself for having fired a whole raft of federal employees responsible for safety, oversight, etc. Or both.
Worth considering whether Trump's act today was all intended to divert public attention completely away from the confirmation hearings for Kash Patel and Tulsi Gabbard, the two nominees likely to face greatest difficulty entering his government.

I miss NPR and especially All Things Considered. Here’s the lady who refused Trump’s Jan 6th pardon saying, “they give you propaganda”. We don’t use this word enough. It’s propaganda, it’s been used before, and we need to guard against it.
