Fun fact: Halifax is not allowed to set a speed limit below 50 km/h without permission from the province.

And the province only considers reductions to 40, not to 30, in most cases.

And the criteria includes a study of whether drivers are already driving close to 40 km/h!

Halifax regional council started the budget process yesterday. Mayor Andy Fillmore introduced a motion that asks council to look at specific ways to make cuts.

Council will need a vacation after this budget process. So will I.

Today is the Trans Day of Remembrance and taking a moment to honour all those who aren't with us, and particularly those who should have been elders. But I also want to celebrate all of the wonderful trans thinkers, advocates, friends and family who are here today. Thank you for being who you are.

there’s a lot of talk of affordability when it comes to property taxes, but not for things the city does to make day-to-day life more affordable for everyone: transit, libraries, programming & grants.

St-Amand is up, he's saying growth has raised a bit of money and a lot of expenses. This is disconnect is costing us. Is all growth created equal? Or should we grow differently to better manage our finances in the long term? Does where we grow cost more or less depending on where it is

Pedestrian only streets and bike lanes should not be removed for winter.
Vulnerable road user crashes account for 22% of all injury and fatal road crashes in HRM. That is justification alone for permanent, not seasonal, safe spaces.

It’s a broken fucking system when we can zone away convenience, zone away a kid being able to walk to go buy a Freezie on a summer’s day without parental supervision, zone away laundromats & ice cream shops, zone away those little everyday interactions with our neighbours.

We keep yelling about the male loneliness crisis and focusing on everything except the harms the system itself is causing. If teen boys don't get mirrors for masculinity, and other kids don't get windows and sliding glass doors, then we're doing kids of all gender identities a major disservice.

This is another consequence of the colonization of New Adult, esp of the romantasy variety, into YA. Publishers aren't just selling YA to adults, they're selling YA to adult women (usually cisallohet and white). That category doesn't want a book about 14yo boys playing basketball. My teen boys do.
