working and talking with americans all day really makes this clear; stuff we take for granted here and in europe--community sport, big clubs you're a part of--don't exist, or are incredibly rare, in the US.

A lot of factors at play but I do think it's worth checking out the documentary "Join or Die" on Netflix because it makes the argument that belonging to social clubs of any sort (a bowling league, a book club, etc.) helps foster a larger overall sense of mutual obligation aka collectivity

I think the “empathy machines” idea was always overblown, but I also do feel that play is an essential part of life and it’s hard to come by when you’re an adult. More importantly, games are a huge part of young people’s lives at this point.

Whenever I see lefty types totally dismiss games I get a little sad and frustrated. Beyond the joy of playing and using your imagination—this is where young people are and where they socialize. Don’t you want to reach them?
