See? It's not that hard.
"Let's not take the soul-sucking path of sacrificing the most persecuted for that which we deem to be most popular. I know that there are transgender children right now looking out at this world and wondering if anyone is going to stand up for them and for their simple right to exist. Well, I am."

This election is so painfully mundane in poli sci terms:
-An incumbent party being defeated in the face of public economic discontent
-An authoritarian capitalizing on discontent to return to office, paying less of a price than we might hope at the ballot box because the public has other priorities

We’re going to hear lots of stories about which people, policies and rhetoric are to blame for the Democrats’ defeat.

Some of those stories may even be true!

But an underrated factor is that 2024 was an absolutely horrendous year for incumbents around the world 👇

There are many layers here. I'll just focus on one for now: maybe the guy who owns a company deeply embedded in government contracts shouldn't also own one of the major companies that's supposed to be holding government accountable.

It won't be just the LA Times and Washington Post. It will be your employer, your university, your school district, and your local elected officials. They will all cave and engage in anticipatory obedience to fascism because of their cowardice and greed.

Your institutions will not save you.

People confused by Trumpist populism don't seem to grasp that blood and soil nationalism is an extreme form of welfare chauvinism: the state will care for its people but it gets to decide who 'the people' are and violently exclude/persecute others
