Lainey is another person I turn to when it comes to breaking down and explaining laws and legal issues regarding disability and digital accessibility.
I’m an author and now on BlueSky so I guess I’m a #BlueSkyAuthor. My book shares stories and strategies from 25+ years of advancing digital #accessibility with collaboration instead of conflict. Digital + print, English + Spanish. More info here: www.lflegal.com/book/structu... #a11y

Finally able to introduce myself properly to @bsky.app !

Hi all, I'm a #deaf historian of #histSTM and #DisabilityHistory at the University of Delaware. I think & write about disability technologies, disabled perspectives, and medical/scientific authority. Hearing aids are my niche topic

A word Americans should know now more than ever:

Kakistocracy- a government run by the worst, least qualified, or most unscrupulous citizens.

Yes, there’s a word for it.

Me to my old employer: I see you have a good thing going here. You force disabled people out, tell them they have extra time to submit an internal complaint so they miss the deadline to file a human rights complaint then refuse to investigate. I’m going to fuck that up for you.
I can now share what my win was! I submitted an internal complaint to my former employer for 5 years of discrimination. It took me 2 years to write up and was 700 pages. They said I had 2 years to submit it. Then, rejected it anyways.

Today, they were ordered to investigate by a government body.
I had a rare activism win today. I can’t share details yet but I can’t believe it happened. I have been hitting my head against a wall for months and then a strategy that I hadn’t considered originally paid off.

The attempt to distinguish "real [condition]" from other forms is rampant. It's a way to divide a community & reduce resources for it

It can also lead to treatment delays. Folks think they're not 'really' depressed/addicted/in pain since they're not miserable 24/7 like those with 'real' [condition]
RFK’s elevation is going to be such a disaster for the autism community. Divisive. Fraudulent. Abusive. Ignorant. Dehumanizing.

I’d like you, right now, to read this by @juststimming.bsky.social and me. /1

Just a few months ago, I was hesitant to agree to write a book on AI. Every day was a new hype cycle. But the /context/ of use is not changing. I am not hesitant anymore. Look for "Disabling Intelligences" from Palgrave MacMillan late next year. In the meantime:

On Being an Outlier
Proponents of AI promise incredible benefits — but at what cost? Sometimes, we mistake AI as a threat for the future, but our systems already rely on algorithms. Dr. Rua Williams reflects on the unexp...

This is a very good time for Bluesky to really invest in accessibility.

Alt text is good, but we need more and there are many of us who can offer feedback.

The best time to invest in accessibility is at the start, but the second best time is now.
I'll pay (I paid for Twitter blue before it got kicked off of the Google store) but only if there are major accessibility improvements. Again many are hyperfocused on alt text for accessibility but there are more critical accessibility bugs that prevent assistive tech users from being on app
Here's how the Bluesky team has described future plans to make the protocol and platform financially sustainable: developing a subscription model for extra features like high-quality video and customizations, while keeping all basic features free bsky.social/about/blog/1...

Newbies will think I'm lying when I say that, before Bluesky supported gifs, we would type something like "surprised guy gif" and everyone understood it and we were fine
times like these when bluesky is shitting the bed are great ones for alt text. the image won’t load but the alt text will

this is exactly why i still buy discs in 2023. it's crazy to think that we are reaching a point where piracy will be the only option to own media once dvds and blu-rays are gone.

It used to be "Reduce, reuse, recycle."

Now it's just "Recycle." Take that product that broke after using it twice and hurl it right into the ol' bin, and don't ask questions about whether recycling actually happens once it's out of your sight.
One of the biggest ways to reduce emissions, and one that very few companies are doing these days?

Actually building a product that lasts.
