Oh neat, there's apparently another film treatment of the Battle of Drøbak Sound (youtu.be/ccz0EXDYg9E?...) and the sinking of the Blücher. Alas, as with the King's Choice (2016) it doesn't seem like they included Eriksen's incredible "Either I will be decorated or I will be court-martialed. Fire!"

NEW: ICE has finally released post-shutdown detention data. The latest data reveals that a full 40%(!) of people arrested in the interior and held in ICE detention have no criminal record; no criminal charges or prior convictions. That is up from just 4% when Trump took office.

No medieval filter here! A modern recreation of a Viking ruler for Denmark’s National Museum, based on the depiction of Cnut in the New Minster Liber Vitae and on clothes found at a grave in Mammen, Denmark. #medievalsky

When the historians of centuries future assess 'American civilization,' and I think what I would want them to remember about us - a man on the moon, the internet, the defeat of the confederacy, Norman Borlaug, Norman Borlaug a second time for emphasis.

And we beat the Nazis into the ground.

I love 'carpet bombing' footnotes - the sort where you supply not one, but a couple dozen examples from ancient sources to prove your point - perhaps most than I should.

But they always make me smile.

There's something really endearing about this or that quality of life mod for a game that the original author is long gone, but someone else dutifully updates the mod for each new version, almost invariably with a "I didn't make this, X made this, all credit to the author, will remove on request."

All of which is to say, the folks longing for the return of old birth-hierarchies are both morally damaged - slavery and the society it sustained were bad - but also grown-ass adults basically running into the public square shouting, "I want to be a pretty pink prince/princess!"

Sure you do.

Right now, inside Hegseth's phone, there's an MI5 guy, a GRU agent, a Chinese MSS hacker, a North Korean intelligence offer and, like, one guy from, like, Romanian military intelligence, all looking around confused.

They see a new log on, expecting Hegseth, but its a hacker from Mexico's CNI.
OK, its not a question of whether the phone is compromised. If you are the spy chief of a major country's intelligence service and your people have not compromised this phone, you should resign and find some other line of work

This is the correct response for every university to take with the Trump administration, as the latest demand of a *consent decree* on Columbia demonstrates.

They intend to kill you anyway. Do not cooperate.

So this is absolutely an attack on democracy, but I am struck by the sequencing, because it doesn't resemble - to me at least - the normal sequencing for an authoritarian takeover.

But I think it makes sense given a conspiratorial and inaccurate view of where liberal support comes from. 1/

The literal genie is a very common trope: when you "make a wish" you get exactly what you wish for.

This is one of the explicit limits on the spell Wish from D&D - often called the most powerful spell in the game because its effect is "make a wish and it comes true."

Just as Putin, Orban and Trump all seem to recognize that tyrants have shared interests, so too we need to recognize that those who would be rid of tyrants too have shared interests that cross national borders.

What we're seeing here is that the US government actually was a pillar of much of what was good in the world, and it's actually very bad when we take it for granted.
