You used to hear something like “yeah they are racist but if anyone was in need they would take the shirt off their back to help you no matter where you came from” and I dunno if that was ever true but it is really really not true now. Absolutely not.
I understand why some white liberals from the Deep South want to insist that there isn't something distinct (and bad) about Southern political culture but the problem with this is that we wouldn't even have this idea of "The South" as distinct from the rest of the US if there wasn't a there there

Honestly, the default position of everyone ought to be that Trump is hiding some really horrific acts. No other rational reason to explain this bizarre behavior other than he fears it would end his presidency.
