The moral vacuity of signing up to "a “just, orderly and equitable” transition away from fossil fuels" because fossil fuel GHG emissions are incompatible with the 1.5°C goal, then immediately reaffirming that Australia will "continue to develop new fossil fuel projects"

More awful actions by this awful Presidency, as far as I can judge from the post, could not read the firewalled article.
“This was the week from hell for environmental policy in the United States,” said Pat Parenteau of Vermont Law and Graduate School. “Unless stopped by the courts, each of these proposed rollbacks will do irreparable harm to the nation’s water quality, endangered species and marine ecosystems.”

Disappointing. Somewhere there is a scheme for concerned countries to take greater action to cut fossil fuel use as a group.
A comprehensive rundown of the #COP30 shenanigans from @roycerk2.bsky.social. From what I saw, the Colombians were the only ones whose negotiators and civil society groups were on the same page, and they carried the whole world on their shoulders.

It emerges in this report that the PLA (Port of London Authority) has had 106 petrochemical spills in the last 5 years. With zero publicity. Is the PLA just like the water companies?
In August, 25,000 kilograms of ‘toxic’ tar was spilled in the Thames. Why was no-one told?

This is a saga of broken valves, anonymous whistleblowers and hundreds of undisclosed oil spills.

Nor can we function at temperatures of over 40 degrees c
There's nothing inherently wrong with climate change. It's just that the ecosystems and built environments that we depend on as life support systems aren't equipped to handle the rapid changes. So if we want to live, we should deal with climate change ASAP.

So many loopholes and caveats means it falls far short, the EU's own science advisers say so

With current pledges, the world's on track for 2.6°C of warming in 2100 compared to preindustrial levels.

10 years ago, before the Paris agreement, it was 3.6°C

20+ years ago, we thought it would be 4-5°C

So 2.6°C is better, but the problem is that climate impacts are way worse than we predicted.
World still on track for catastrophic 2.6C temperature rise, report finds

The article is behind a paywall but the headline contained the important news. Someone should tell Bill Gates. Of course, Gates and his billionaire pals are well aware of this reality. However, they don't consider themselves part of "humanity" so they don't think it is a high priority.

Maybe Bill Gates can explain to poor Indian households why they’re not able to afford clothes anymore because climate change has caused extreme rain leading to a collapse in India’s cotton output.

But sure, Bill, climate change isn’t the immediate urgent problem, is it?
Extreme rain collapses India’s cotton output which has fallen to a 17-year low.

“Western states Maharashtra and Gujarat, along with southern states Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, received heavy, untimely rainfall in October, damaging cotton crops ready for harvest.”
